Hey guys,
Just wondering if you guys had any games you love that have slipped through the cracks through the years that aren't classics. Classics would be the obvious - Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Burger Time, etc.
Some to consider:
The Glob -- I still really love this game. It's like Pac-Man meets Elevator Action.
Eagle
Shuuz
Timber
Pig Out
What are some of your favorites you think are often overlooked?
-
Lady Killer. I'm addicted to it - and it has nothing to do with the naked ladies and everything to do with the gameplay. Seriously!
-
Another one I thought of -- Krazy Bowl. Great game.
-
I consider anything before '84 classic. I didn't really like any of the main classics when I was a kid. My faves were Gyruss and Xevious....and Congo Bongo, cos the graphics were coool.
-
I really like the game Grodba. http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=G&game_id=8015
-
Maybe the game "Targ" is not considered a classic. It was at my college so I played it a lot even though it seemed like sort of an econo-game compared to Asteroids or Missile Command. I think my other favorites like Star Castle or Qix are classics but not mega-hits. Klax is fun too but I guess I don't play to many super obscure games.
-
is bull fight a classic ? i love that game...found it on MAME i love it
-
Bosconian, superman. bubble bobble robocop and 1944
-
You know that I try every game you guys list .. and they usually end up in my favs. Check out Twin Cobra. My Fav and the reason I made a MAME cab.
D-
-
Twin Cobra, nice call! I haven't played that in eons. I'm going to have to check if I have it!
Congo Bongo was also awesome. I play that one still.
-
Forgot to mention dyna gear
-
Uo Poko is usually mentioned in these threads. Never played it myself, though, I usually stick to Robotron.
-
I sometimes play Klax, it's a good test of reflexes and brain power.
Tapper is another pretty good old game but might be considered a classic.
Another game i used to play when MK and SF2 came out was Art of Fighting for the Neo Geo. Some may not care for it though.
-
I like Mappy
-
Armor Attack
Hat Trick
Indy Heat
Time Killers ( I know I know but I still like it)
-
Tetris
720
Jailbreak
-
Any Star Castle fans on the board? I loved the rush when you were being chased by the sparks. What I like about it is that although its cool on my cab, the vector graphics mean I can play it in work on my monitor and it looks razor sharp.
-
Lady bug
Super cobra
Road fighter
-
Astro Blaster - one of the first video games I ever played.
Qix - awesome.
Penguin-Kun Wars - way too much fun.
-
Shuffle Shot, Reactor, Puzzle Bobble, Blood Brothers.
-
Shuffle Shot, Reactor, Puzzle Bobble, Blood Brothers.
:laugh2:
Oh Cowbell,...you didn't say something funny? I laughed at your post anyway. :-[

I'm saving it up to really wow everyone. Here it is... wait for it... Aw crap, I forgot what I was gonna say.
-
Thats more like it Cowbelly... :laugh2:
Now back on topic. eeehh..eh...hmm. excuse me.
Awesome Knock-offs of the legendary classics...
Donkey Kong Jr
Super Pacman
Mario Bros
-
My find is Pang (U.S. version I think was Buster Bros.). My daughter and I got rather addicted to it. It seemed so simple.
A mainstream game that I never liked was Frogger. My son found it a couple of weeks ago and I am really digging it now.
A while back a thread like this came through and Juno First came up. I had never played it. It is also a pretty cool game.
I really was into Star Castle back when it was in the arcade. I got a vectrex because it more or less played it faithfully. But Star Castle was pretty main stream though wasn't it?
Qix always rocked.
Twin Cobra, nice call! I haven't played that in eons. I'm going to have to check if I have it!
Congo Bongo was also awesome. I play that one still.
I remember liking this as a kid, but when I tried it at an auction recently I found it kind of slow. I remembered it being a whole heck of a lot harder too.

Mario Bros
Mario Bros is a knock off? I thought it was a totally unique game for its time.

Oh geeze...I hope I didn't open can worms here with that. I guess I don't know the full story, but from my view it is a Nintendo game boasting Mario, turned mad plumber...with a striking resemblance to his predecessors in DK & DKJ.
Knock-off was the WRONG term. Mario's Reincarnation perhaps? As it was not quite as legendary as 'Donkey Kong' itself (hence the mention in"Best non-classic games" thread) I totally loved the game and played the be-jesus out of it. Surely at least $100, $0.25 at a time. I'm very grateful to be able to play the game finally again, 17 years after my last play at Bodega Pizza!!
-
Lol you guys have some funny ideas of what is 'non-classic'! Pang? Qix? Jailbreak? Tetris? All classics in my book and most other books I would think.
My fav 'non-classic' is Bomberman World, awesome 4 player action from 1992.
-

I understand what you are saying but it is so hard to bite ur tongue on the games that you really love...to talk about odd titles that slipped through. Also, when the word 'classic' and 'arcade' game are in the same sentence, FOR ME is a small window of time...like 80-84. This is why I mention Tetris, and all my other screw ups, 720. :-[
Sorry guys...I'm officially done stinking up this thread any further...psssooouwwn I'm out! :banghead:
-
You're not stinking it up.
There are so many definitions of classic. I guess the technical term is anything up to '84.
My interpretation are the most popular, as I listed in the beginning, the kind of games that are timeless and most financially successful. One day, Golden Tee will probably be a classic. Although some probably consider it one already.
I think people should put down whatever they want, and not quivel about the definition.
Paperboy, by the way, is one of my all time favs, and Arch Rivals.
-
Black Tiger
Eyes
Kid Niki
Moon Patrol
-
Found another fun one Burning force (japan) gets funner as it goes .
-
Gotta put my vote in for Raiden. Don't know exactly why, but I can spend hours playing it.
-

I can provide some history for this likeness as the likeness was intentional as it was the same character. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo created him and is perhaps one of the most influential game designers ever and concieved Mario in Donkey Kong as a future star of other games. There is a wicked interview with him in the coffee table book 'High Score' that explains the entire Mario Story and how he evolved.
-
Willow is one of my favs.
When I was a kid, there was a pizza shop in my neighborhood that had it. After I pitched a game of Little League, we stopped in for dinner. I was rocking the game like I never had, but had to go to the bathroom like you wouldn't believe.
I was like 10, and didn't want to leave my high scoring game, which was achieved while doing a serious pee-pee dance.
Unfortunately, my bladder won out. It was quite embarassing.
Baby Pac-Man is the oft-overlooked game in the Pac-Man family, but it rocked. It was hard to find where I lived.

Opp hold-on, bzzz. We must now all bow our heads to the mere mention of his name...Miyamoto :notworthy: ok continue...
-
Miyamoto is the man! He arguably saved the video game industry.
-
New Zealand Story
Pacland
Bump N Jump
Space Fury
Berzerk
These keep me entertained when I tire of the "Classic" Classics.
-
Rampart.
Simple but addictive.
I remember my best man and I absolutely destroying a young kid 'cause we wanted to play head to head.
Felt good to give back what I always got while growing up. ;D
And Commando keeps a hectic pace. Love that game!
-
Rampart.

x2.
I need a trackball to play it though! :hissy:
-
It's a classic, but Rip Off would have my vote - black and white , co-op multiplayer goodness!
-

That is so funny, when I was about 8 or 9 I was rocking Kung Fu like never before at the local arcade and had to pee so badly. I got to like the third or fourth level, I was doing better than ever before, and the bathroom was across the street.
I thought I could hold out, but no lol. I had on dark corduroys though and looked down at my shoes to see this small puddle that no one around had noticed. So I just kinda walked out and all the way home defeated lol.
-
My favorites are
1) Star Castle
2) Rip-off (the ultimate 2 player game)
3) Qix
-
attaxx
Cheyenne (I played a lot, wasn't good at it and not sure if it could be considered a non-classic)

Mordt...Thanks for the tip on the book...I guess it's off to Barnes & Noble for me...or Amazon or something.
Guys- I have been over active in a thread that I don't really belong in. I apologize for that. The problem is I consider myself a 'classic arcade' FAN, but unfortunately was grossly deprived of title variety (non classic) growing up. Crosby, MN population 2000...arcade games were far and few between, but oh so appreciated when available. Very few 'non classics' and 'off titles' made it our way...we were lucky to have what little we had. Thanks again 'Park Arcade' ('81-'85?) and 'Bodega Pizza('70's-'96)...you did your best with what you had and damn it...there is one kid that will never forget IT!! 'Bodega Dick' you are a pizza LEGEND in Crosby and one day I will get your recipe for the sauce!
I want to buy the old 'Park Arcade' building someday...about 800 sq. ft. ran down yeeassh fix-er upper. It's where I first played some great games including DK. Where I pestered and begged for quarters. Where I hung out and didn't belong (too young 7-8ish). Where I cashed checks from my mom for like .50. It is where it all started. It is where 'it' all went down. This is where it was AT baby!
81-85 why did you have to end? :'(
My nics back then-Lil' Jonsey A.K.A. 'Skin', 'Skinner', 'Lil Eraser' to name a few... (Crosby circa '75-'00)
-
My non-classic favourites:
Super Sprint
Cabal
Final Fight
We've been playing Super Sprint (3 players) for hours and hours on the mamecab lately.
And thanks for the tip on the "High Score!" book. Just ordered the second edition (only $7!). I can't wait..
-
81-85 why did you have to end? :'(
I'll tell you why it had to end! I would've exploded if I had to stay a virgin much longer.
-
both in the vein of bubble bobble:
nightmare in the dark
penguin brothers
digdug / drmario hybrid:
mr driller (run in Zinc)

NP DK, there is an edition 2 out now also I believe they added a few more years to the history of video games but not sure as I havent bought it yet. I've got edition 1
-
Smash TV, both TMNT, Simpsons.
And if you like overhead flyers like 1944, Gigawing is awesome. Has a sweet reflection ability that adds a lot to the same ol' same ol' of arcade action flyers.
-
LOL - love what some of you think of non-classics... Classic to gamers or classic to the masses might be a real good question.
But for what I don't think of classics are
Mr Driller - might be one of the best and simplest games made in recent times
LOTS of vertical shooters are great! One of the themes that seemed to really get better as time went on. Some of the classics have good memories... but I like the newer ones better.
But I still spend 95% of my time on Robotron, Rygar, Moon Patrol, ect... and these are classics.
-
Anyone check out my suggestion of "The Blob?" It's a really great game, and a lot of fast-paced fun. I haven't had anybody I suggested it to say they didn't like it.
A definite "Non-classic classic."
I've got to check out Mr. Driller. I'd never heard of it until today.
-

OTOH hmmmm
Word.

Black Tiger
Eyes
Kid Niki
Moon Patrol
Moon Patrol stole many coins from me back in the day. I'd consider it a "classic" but that's just me.
-
We used to play Moon Patrol on the apple IIC. Played it for hours. Played it until we got totally sick of it. Until I built my cab, I never played the real thing (about 2 weeks ago). Funny, but the sound on the IIC was very gritty in comparison.
-
One from the "classic" timeframe that I'm surprised wasn't a big hit - Flicky. Very "cute" and good gameplay.
And probably my fav from the post-classic era - Assault. Just something about hitting that jumppad and raining down nukes - makes me scream GET SUM inside everytime! >:D
-
Assault is a great game. I almost got one at an auction about a year and a half ago. There are so many times I want to take both joys to the right or left in Battlezone. I got spoiled in Assault. It is sort of a surreal game. No real music to speak of, you are just sort of in the midst of battle from the get go and it can get pretty intense.

I always liked the music in between stages on Assault.
And agreed on Flicky. Great game.
Regarding "The Glob", does anyone know if the sounds in MAME are accurate? They sound terrible (that buzz when picking up the fruit). The version that runs on 'Pacman hardware' sounds much better.
-
I don't know if the Pac hardware is more accurate, but it does sound much better.
Go Go Mr. Yamaguchi, made by the same programmers as Kid Nikki, is pretty fun. Found that one today.
-
x2.
I need a trackball to play it though! :hissy:
There is a clone called "ramprt2p" that uses Joysticks for the controls.
-
I was overcome by the irony of "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker" when I played it this morning before heading to the office.
You are Michael Jackson, trying to collect small children as you make your way through streets beating up bad guys with a magical lazer that comes out of your finger and a special dance move that kills all bad guys on the screen. Also, if you collect Bubbles the monkey, you turn into Robo-Michael, and shoot more powerful lazers, all while a clunky version of "Smooth Criminal" babbles in the background. :police:
A true non-classic classic.
A-he-he! Ow!

Heh, I was playing that earlier today. It's a really strange game, and very ironic.
