Title: are xbox 360 suppose to sound loud while they run?
Post by: dudebozo on January 03, 2007, 12:53:38 pm
yeah, i just picked up a 360 with all these crazy sales going on and used up my giftcards.  i got home the other day, hooked it all up to our HDTV, looks beautiful.  my question is, when the system is running, it seems kind of loud.  i understand that it's basically a rig, but it just seems a lil loud.  i've heard of some stuff of these systems getting real hot and stuff.  i was playing gears of war for two hours the other day and it seemed to be just fine, the system didn't feel hot at all.  oh yeah, from people's experiences, is it better to leave it flat, or go vertical with this thing?  thanks for the help guys

Does that make a difference?  I usually have the surround cranked up so I don't hear the disc spinning.

Not sure why it would. Seems to be the same regardless of which way my system is sitting.

I am the same though. No point in surround sound if it isn't going to be cranked. :)

Mine is extremely loud.  I put an external fan called the Intercooler on it and it made it sound even worse.  It works well, but it sounds more like a ceiling fan than a CPU fan.  It was late at night and I had the sound off because my wife was sleeping in the other room.  She awoke and came in to tell me should could hear the fans from the bedroom.

My friend has the same setup and he claims his is not as loud as mine.  Maybe it differs from system to system.

Shouldn't make much of a difference, I was just answering his question.  I don't really like the idea of vertical CD/DVD drives personally, but my decision to lay it horizontal was more based on my entertainment center than my fears of the dvd drive or noise.

If you don't mind voiding your warranty extremetech has an article (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2066860,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532) on how to quiet your 360.

The 360 is loud.  It's about as loud as the dreamcast :(

I've been moving my 360 around (don't do that while it is on).  I have found it is quieter in certain areas.  Probably because the sound reflects differently off stuff.

I asked the same question on here about 4 weeks ago when I bought mine, I've found that the old Xbox games run very quietly and only the odd 360 game sounds loud when the disc is spinning.
The loudest culprit for me so far has been Dead Rising, but its such a great game I just crank up the surround sound to drown it whilst hacking the undead to pieces  :laugh2:
