I have an old heater blower motor from my Volvo. I took it apart and the aperature spins nicely and the mass gives it a unique feel. Maybe this could be a Major Havoc control. Anyone know what those are called (drum spinner ? ) as I have not been able to find any "how to build" info on that. Or maybe just a regular Tempest-like spinner? Any other ideas on what to do with it? I would just use the mechanical parts and a mouse hack to make this work with Mame.

I know the part you're talking about. Thats hilarious!
I think due to the imperfect shape, it'd be hard to make a fuzz and spill resistant controller. I also think unless I was going to make a dedicated Major Havoc panel, I'd rather use the spinner since it would be preferable for so many other games.

What is funny is that if that blower worked, it was worth $100. ;D
Here's to hoping it was dead.

Don't worry. It was from a Volvo but apparently had been replaced with a cheapo motor years ago so I decided just to play with this one. And the new cheapo motor was just $20.00. About a year and a half ago I noticed a junked cabinet - broken apart- up the street so I hauled the pieces home. I repainted it (white primer) and, in keeping with the origins of this project, I am hoping to get Mame going with many recycled or reclaimed materials. My main interest is in building new controls and maybe learn a little bit about electronics. I am going to use replaceable panels so I'll be able to plug in a panel for specific a game if I need to. I was wondering whether a rubber hose might just fit around the armature to give it a good feel. Or some material might work that I haven't thought about. Incidentally, I noticed that a real (reproduction) Havoc roller sells for $199.00 !

It looks like a red or blue silicon radiator hose might fit over the armature nicely. I'm going to see if a regular auto supply store has one. Length about 2 inches and ID about 2 inches. Or if anyone knows a good alternative... I am going for a generic roller - not a replica of Major Havoc.
