Title: Painting Textured Vinyl Overlay?
Post by: Scumgriever on December 28, 2006, 02:50:42 pm
Hey everybody,

I'm in the process of building my controll panel and have bought some 'Textured Vinyl Overlay' from Ozstick.
http://www.ozstick.com.au/prod_tmould.html - down the page a bit.

I was wondering if anyone knows the best way of getting some artwork on it. My mate is overly keen to help and is very handy with an air-brush, I was wondering if any one knows any details about painting on this stuff.

i.e. What paint is best to use? How durable can I expect the artwork to be? Is there a better way than air-brush? Am I just dreaming and should be happy with the nice finish even if it is just black?

I have a roll here and photos that might help more than the Ozstick one but no way of getting the photos from my phone to my computer till I borrow my girlfriend's memory card reader. That'll have to wait a day or two.

Anyway, Any thoughts?

It doesn't take paint very well and whatever paint you put on it won't be very durable.

The only way round that one is to airbrush it with enamels and then cover it with a sheet of plexiglass.

Sorry I didn't reply, Fozzy, busy with the new year and all.

I did get a chance to work on my controll panel for a while and going with your advice I've left it blank, I don't like the idea of quickly faded/scratched artworks and can't stand plexi. I'm pretty happy with the result though.

Thats not to say i've given up on CP artwork, I had a chat to my friend and have decided that seeing as the panel itself is metal we'll use car paint, I'll drill up a second plate and leave it with him in his shop, to use other peoples letover paint. ;)

Not sure it'll feel great on hot days but there's only one way to find out... actually two, has anyone else got a metal control panel with car paint? Is it a good idea?
