Gonna be tackling my first MAME project and found this cabinet locally. In my advanced years my memory is not so good, but I remember Arch Rivals having only 2 buttons, not 3 like the one pictured. I'm picking it up tomorrow night and have lots to learn before I start!!

Looks right to me..... besides the yellow side coloring on the cabinet.

Yes... That's almost certainly been modified.... It's a basic arch rivals cab... I'm not 100% certain what it actually started life as though. There were a couple of other sports games put in those cabs and it could be that Arch Rivals was fitted as an upgrade kit.

Thats a generic Bally/Midway. Used for quite a few games, most notably Rampage. My horizontal MAME cab is based on a this same cab, but mine was a 3 player Power Drive. I left it pretty much original, just built a new CP for it.

Interesting. The picture shows 3 buttons but the description says:
Controls:
Joystick: 49-position optical
Buttons: 2
Tok:
I like your CP. Do you have a template I could follow or did you just wing it?
-
Basically winged it... I traced the original onto MDF and used a Capcom Street Fighter II template to position and drill the controls. Its a standard 6 button layout, the 6th buttons are hard to see because they are black.
If I was going to do it one last time, I'd eliminate the separate mouse buttons, and use them as the bottom row of player one.
Almost forgot...The one mod I made as far as the layout was putting a thumb button by player 1 stick for Defender. I just eyeballed that one. If you want the Capcom template and can't find it, let me know and I'll send it to you. I think I found it here by just doing a search.

Tok was helpful when I built my cp for my bally/midway machine as well. Everything just barely fit on mine - I had to eliminate the trackball mounting plate. Here is a picture of my CP:

To make the trackball fit centered on the cabinet, I had to cut out some of the metal on the CP on the lip. Tok told me I might have to do that - so I was ready for it.
Good luck!

Sweet!
What are the buttons on the top of the CP, from left to right?
Also, where did you guys get your trackball? Any recommendations for best price/performance?
Thanks

Leapinlew - tell me you put some smoked plexi in front of that tv...
Otherwise - a work of art!

I used a Happ 3" USB ball. Actually, there was a whole debacle with a 2.25" Suzo trackball leading up to that.
No complaints with the Happ, plugs in and is detected as a Human Interface Device (mouse) by Windows. Came wired with 3 buttons. Think it was around 85 bucks for the ball and plate.
As Lew said, it is a bit of a tight fit to get into where the CP tapers down. I used a Dremel to cut away part of the metal CP base for a mounting bolt. You can see in Lew's pic where the base meets the actual control panel, there is a rather wide lip around the edge.
Edit to add: I got the trackball through Tornado Terry on E-bay. He's a big arcade part seller. You'll be able to find no problem by typing in that name.

Nothing wrong with that.
I'm guessing there's two punch buttons, wired together. Look at pigskin (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=P&game_id=9012), a near relative of arch rivals (same joystick, same age, same idea but football, same cab): the game wires "three buttons" to the PCB, but had four on the CP, with punch on both side buttons. (The pigskin manual also shows this.)
The other time you'll see more buttons on the CP is when the buttons are mirrored/copied buttons on both sides of the joystick, such as on some ikari CPs (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=I&game_id=8180).

Was that a Spy Hunter II?
-
No, it was called Power Drive. It was/is a monster truck game. Its appearance is original other than the CP. Marquee, bezel and side art is unmolested. :)
-
I too got my Happ Trackball from TornadoTerry...I also got my buttons and a couple of joysticks from him as well. Good guy. Fast shipper.

That's interesting, because somebody was asking about that bezel on here a few months ago and nobody had an answer as to what game it was from.

I was about to say the same thing.
-
Sorry I missed the post about the bezel. I can see it being hard to identify, because there aren't any pictures of trucks or anything, but the instructions (painted, not a card) definitely give some good hints about the game.

That's it exactly; I've got an Arch Rivals panel sitting right here, and the "Punch/Steal/Pass" button is doubled up, one on either side of the "Shoot/Block" button.

Admin buttons in this order left to right
Player 1, Credit, Quit, Pause, Credit, Player 2
Yeah, I put smoked plexi on it (expensive booger!). This was a progress shot. Carefully fit everything on your CP because there isn't a ton of room to work with, but you can make it work.
