Title: Why no super mario arcade version?
Post by: Druxar on December 19, 2006, 11:02:12 pm
I've been waiting and watching for years and I have seen every arcade game I ever knew/anticipated has been emulated except super mario bros.  Is there an official reason for that?  I'd have expected something like that to have been done long ago.

But those are the nintendo console ones. I was wondering why the official arcade version doesn't exist

Are you talking about VS. Super Mario Bros? If so, good news! Your wait is over.

Maybe...I noticed this and the playchoice ones are the only ones listed on KLOV.  I always thought of this as seeming NES'ish too. Maybe it's been a while and it all looks the same now.
Was there a separate arcade super mario or was it always based on the NES version or where did I go wrong?

I don't recall ever seeing a seperate arcade version of Super Mario Bros, I could definately be wrong though.

There was a stand alone. It was called Vs. Super Mario Bros.

So there was, wasn't feeling too confident on that one.

Happy about it though. More mario I didn't know about, can't believe I'm still finding new stuff in Super Mario Bros 20 years after thinking I'd finished it.

There was a seperate one, and it's similar but not identical to the NES one.  The arcade one is harder (and imho more fun).

graphics and most levels are pretty identical though, without playing it for a while, it looks like a clone of the NES game.

until level 6 or 7 that's where it changes... oh and there isn't all the extra life mushrooms and crap making it a bit more difficult....

Also, I don't believe you can do the unlimited lives trick with the turtles on the cliff ...at least I could never do it in the arcade...

"how many lives do you have left?"
"2, I think. How about you?"
"I have upper-left-corner-cloud-piece lives left. " :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

That's about the time you start hoping you didn't get too many extra lives.

"I can go all day without burning off all of these!"

*dies, gets GAME OVER*

"NOOOOOO!  I bounced too many times!" :hissy:

There was a patch to the arcade version that disallowed this.  I worked at an arcade and there was a period before and after the patch (where one disappointed customer wasn't all that happy about the patch.)

Weird, I swear I remember seeing it in the arcade before the NES hit the shelves.  And there's these from the Wikipedia article (bold emphais added by me):

Quote
(Japanese: スーパーマリオブラザーズ) is a video game released by Nintendo in late 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Quote
As one of Nintendo's most popular games, Super Mario Bros. has been re-released and remade numerous times, ranging from an arcade version released soon before the original NES release, to its inclusion as an unlockable game in the GameCube game Animal Crossing.

Quote
As with many older arcade games, it is not clear exactly when this game was released; while the arcade boards themselves are stamped "1985,"[6] the Killer List of Video Games and the MAME game listing list the game as having been released in 1986.[7][8]

Anybody else remember it that way?  At least in my neighborhood, that was the big deal about the NES:  It played Super Mario just like the arcade.  We were already pumping quarters into the thing when the NES appeared.

I was playing Vs. Super Mario Bros at the arcade way before I got my NES, in fact because I was spending so much money at the arcade I was happy to see it come with the NES...

I was very disappointed when I got to the level that is different on the NES version since that was the level I was stuck on on the arcade version. I pretty much beat the NES version on either the 2nd or 3rd try since I had so much practice already from the arcade version....

You can do it in the arcade...its a bit of a pain figuring out how..but once you get it, its easy to repeat.

Yep, that's how I remember it too.  I remember getting the NES home and my girlfriend marvelling about how great the graphics on it were.
