Title: POLL: How many BYOAC Forum Windows at once?
Post by: Donkey_Kong on December 17, 2006, 04:06:59 pm
I sometimes get about 3 and sometimes 4 going at once when I'm really juiced on caffeine. How many do you roll with on your high points? More than 4 or 5? I would say more than 5 and you are a BYOAC Forum addict and should seek some help...more than 6 windows and you are probably too far gone!

 :o

Chadtower? 7,8, 10 or more hehehe

I think chad has a whole PC dedicated just for byoac postings, nothing wrong with that though.  :D

Just one Firefox tab.  Sorry guys.

There is no Chad: he is an artificial intelligence script that auto-posts...

Or, quite possibly an alien evil overlord?

My thoughts exactly.  :D

Havok. I love AtomicFE. I just might be running that on Timbercade! If I make either one of my two big ebay auctions going right now...Timbercade is in the BAG!

I think my record for tabs and/or byoac windows at once is about 8 now. It's all good...

 :dunno

ummmmmm, definately an addict.  Right now I have 20 byoac forum threads open in tabs.  I go into one of the forum sections and open every new item of interest in a tab and then cycle through them one at a time, that way I don't end up back at the list of topics over and over and over again.  I hate the back button.  No matter where I am on the internet I rarely only have one tab up.  I think my browsing habbits are probably odd, but I like my system.

1 tab, you people are silly. :laugh2:

see y'all later, I got some reading to do.

Yippy, I do it RIGHT.  If that's how saint does it then it's good enough for me. :notworthy:

Okay, wait... let me wipe off my nose.

I do the same... but I open the unread topics (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=unread) and don't look in sections.

I have 9 open right now after closing a few :P

I usually only have one, but sometimes two if I need to do research while I'm posting (like using the search feature to find a quote or something).  Thank god this is the only forum I visit or I'm sure I would need to seek professional help.  I cut down on the amount of time I spent here a few months back, but I've been especially compulsive lately.

Heh, the amount of time I'm spending on this forum is beginning to get ---smurfing--- ridiculous. The ironic thing is that it's eating into the already limited time I have available for playing games and building arcade related stuff.

It's not something I set out to do. What tends to happen is that I log on the internet to do something important. Then I say to myself, OK I'll just take a quick look at the BYOAC board before I start. Bad mistake. An hour or two later I realise I've run out of time to do whatever it was I logged on to do in the first place (if I can even remember what it was). It doesn't help that BYOAC used to be my home page.

I might try shmokes trick of blocking access through my router for a few days at a time. One of the "features" of my router is that it takes several minutes to reboot when you make any changes to the settings. So at least that should act as a deterrent to casually accessing the BYOAC site. However, it's not really an ideal solution. I don't want to stop using the site altogether. I just want to limit my access to certain times and/or days of the week. I'm thinking that perhaps there might be some sophisticated parental controls program that could do the trick. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Alternatively, I might have to consider doing what Paige Oliver did recently, and simply take a complete break for a few months. I've got some serious issues to deal with in my life, and unfortunately spending many hours per week on this site is an indulgence I really cannot afford right now.

I felt stupid when I first posted this thread. Turns out I'm not the only BYOAC multi window/tab junky around here eh?

Oh Grasshopper, Once you figure out your cut back solution...You be sure and let all us other BYO-AholiCs in on it!

This is actually incorrect behavior for a true addict.  Chad will back me up on this.  With the number of post whores on this board, discussions in threads sometimes take place in near real-time.  It's actually more difficult to follow a fast-moving conversation if you do it your way.  With a single tab going I can post a comment and immediately click around to each of the forum sections that have threads I'm participating in to see if anyone has responded to my last post.  If I cycled through the threads the way you do, by the time I get back to the first thread and refresh it there might be ten or fifteen new posts and I may have forever lost the opportunity to respond to some idiotic comment with a timely zinger.  Frequently visiting the list of topics page lets the website do the bulk of the work for me when it comes to managing threads efficiently.  At a glance I can see where the new activity is, and I don't even have to check/refresh the other pages because I know there's nothing new there.

I can tell you without even asking that this is exactly how Chad does it, because that, combined with a high WPM, is the only way you could manage to maintain the kind of supernatural last-word rate he and I (time permitting) have.  Sometimes the fastest way to multi-task is to single-task.  Or something.

I switch between the single tab method shmokes is talking about and the RSS feed.  The RSS feed is probably the most efficient method but doesn't quite give you the global view that just clicking back to the forum root does.

Do we have any stats on how many people use the RSS feed?  It hasn't been there long and it didn't get officially announced but it works really well.

The RSS feed feature is very cool. Thanks for the tip!

Nice poll.  I am glad I didn't disappoint, I have slightly changed my technique, but I still had 18 tabs open when I voted.

Doesn't 15 tabs cause Firefox to bloat way up in RAM usage?  I know if I have as many as 5 open it frequently leaks memory like a sieve and sometimes also gets into an infinite loop scenario and has to be killed via the process table.
Title: Re: POLL: How many BYOAC Forum Windows at once?
Post by: bfauska on April 09, 2007, 11:17:01 am
I'm pretty sure I have had as many as 40 open before and it hasn't locked up.  Maybe some conflict where it doesn't play nicely with something.

Memory leaks and infinite loops aren't lockups.

Memory leaks and infinite loops aren't lockups.

Poorly phrased on my part.  As many as 40 tabs without a significant impact on machine performance other than maxing my bandwidth to load that many pages at once.  At a minimum I start out with about 10 tabs any time I check a forum.  My machine specs are nothing spectacular: Athlon XP 2800+ 512MB ram.

1 or 2 is as much as I can handle since I'm on here while at work most of the time (thankfully this is one of the few remaining enjoyable websites our security team hasn't seen fit to block access to yet).  I've briefly delved into using RSS but haven't figured out how to use it effectively yet...

LMAO

Keep in mind that my way is only superior for someone with an unhealthy psychological need to get the last word all the time.  :)

I'll go with Chad.  My experience is that Firefox leaks memory like a D.C. prostitute leaks national secrets.  It's not too bad if you reboot your computer frequently, but it's pretty bad . . . probably my biggest (possibly only) complaint about Firefox.

You don't have to reboot if you kill the process manually when you see it start to happen.  The "restore session" ability in 2.0 makes it less annoying.

Huh. I'll leave it running for days on end, opening and closing dozens of tabs and new windows. After several days I notice issues and shutdown/restart it, but for those several days I don't have problems.
