Title: Please help me with my showcase cab monitor! std, med, or high? avga? (pics)
Post by: Cuba on December 15, 2006, 08:09:16 pm
Quick summary: a few months back I went to the super auctions liquidation of Escapade Arcade in Emeryville CA, and bought a 36" showcase cab playing tekken 4.  It has since been playing tekken like a champ, but now is the time to mame it up.  I just ordered an arcade vga, its currently in transit.

All my other mamed cabinets have involved tv's instead of actual monitors.  I knew I would need an arcade vga for a standard res monitor so I ordered one.  But now that im doing deeper research, I'm starting to think my monitor is NOT standard.  More likely a medium res, or possibly even a high res screen. (is there such a thing?)

But i cant find any documentation on the damn thing to figure it out.  The cabinet itself is definitely a dynamo, all the labels say so.  The screen could be from sharp image judging from some of the stickers? KTMF 38" R ?

But ive also got the tekken 4 game manual.  It says the dipswitch sets the horizontal sync at either 15.75 kHz or 31.5 kHz. 15.75 is standard, yes? But medium res is 25 kHz right? So does that make this a high res monitor?  God this is confusing........

Alright, so what I want to know:
what res is this monitor actually?
who makes it, and can i find any docs on it?
how do I hook it up to my PC without damage to myself or the hardware?

I was there at the auction.   Picked up the Soul Calibur 2 Showcase cab.  I Got a pretty good look at your cab.  It looked like Standard (low-res) to me.  I'm pretty sure it is. Arcade VGA card is probably what you need.

Ah, i remember that cabinet, I liked it a bit more cause the speakers were in the monitor housing instead of on the control panel. Was the screen ok on that one?

Thanks for you input. I just checked the tekken system and the switch is definitely set to low res, I dont know how i got that confused.

Keep in mind that just because a "game" pcb is switchable between resolutions this does NOT neccissarily mean that the "monitor" is switchable. So it's not advisable to be switching resolutions around until you know for sure what your monitor is capable of.

That monitor looks to be a Kortek/Sharp. (hence the KTMF)
Are the any identifying markings on the grey chassis pcb itself like :  KT-xx14 or something?
You may have a auto multi-sync monitor in there. (which would be a good thing)

Yeah, just used the degaussing buttons on the remote and everything looks great now.  If there is a VGA port somewhere on your monitor chassis then it also supports VGA.  If not, then it's probably just low (standard) res.
