Title: Why do roms need updating?

This may be a stupid question, but why do game roms need to be updated for a new release of mame? I was under the impression that the roms were dumps from the originals and were therefore static. But I recently upgraded from mame .103 to .111 and now many games fail the audit. I guess I'm confused as usual  :dizzy:
