how about using the ctrlr files

Then wire it like

  123
7456

then in the ctrlr folders make a neogeo.ini remap the controls do it is like

SirPoonga,

 Thanks for the reply. I've looked into this a little because I'm not really familiar with the ctrlr ini files. If my understanding is correct, I have to create a new ctrlr file with the neogeo.ini remap. Then, I set up my FE with a command line option to run all neogeo games using that ctrlr file. Am I correct? Thanks again..........

Yeah, basically.

You make a folder in the ctrlr folde (for example MyArcade)
Then you setup a default.ini file witht he defaul setup.
Then a neogeo.ini file with the neogeo setup.
All controls you can use in the ini files you will see in the std.ini file.

Then either edit the mame.ini file or run mame like:
mame -ctrlr MyArcade mslug
