Title: Emulation now on the Wii!
Post by: barnes on December 03, 2006, 08:54:03 pm
Ladies and gentlemen, we can emulate on our Wiis now! It uses all the old Gamecube eumlation, but a little tough to set up. REad about it here (http://wii-news.dcemu.co.uk/running-homebrew-and-emulators-on-the-wii-console-tutorial-44842.html)

Thanks. I saw what to do about fixing it, but I was too lazy to do it myself.  ;D

I just finished reading the link. I'm really interested to give this a shot when I got my Wii.

Of what use is this? With WiiConnect24, bugs like this will be fixed often. Also, they've just found a way to run code on the Wii. They haven't coded anything yet, and that may prove to be more difficult.

There is stuff coded already for the gamecube, and the Wii can run it.

Also, I'm unsure what exactly will run, but if GCOS can be run, there are..... questionable activities.... that may be able to take place with this hack.

As for WiiConnect, if you really want to run this stuff, don't connect.  Simple as that.

Yeah, I expect them to patch this one quick.

That makes me excited about getting a wii going for this though -- how cool is that with no mods?

Wow.  If you try to run emulators for the GC on the Wii, that's likely running emulators inside an emulator.  We're talking geometrically increased HP needed to run 8-16 bit games.  I know it's REALLY early but now that they have a way to run their own binaries on the Wii you may as well wait for them to port the stuff.  It won't take long.

What? Please elaborate...

Also, what is the state of the gamecube emulators? They must be pretty crappy (as most owners don't even know you can perform emulation on it, including myself) since the "Gamecube Emulation Scene" not known by many.

Add chad's little performance problem...and what do you get?

3 frames per second!  :lame:

It's a start.  And everything starts someplace.

I bet the GC emulation scene is low because the GC has no hard drive and you'd have to either heavily mod the console or use MiniDVDs AFTER adding the modchip.

Wasn't someone making custom tops for the GC so you could use full size DVDs?

Actually, I saw that somewhere online once, and haven't been able to find it since. But the Panasonic Q takes full DVDs, even though it probably has a different architecture than the GC.

Oh, they're out there and not that hard to find, but they aren't cheap.

Replacement cases can be had for around $20.  It doesn't really matter much though, since a replacement case does not allow you to store more data on a disc.  The gamecube laser can only read the first 1.4gigs of a disc (the size of mini dvd's), so even a full size DVD case will only allow you to store that amount on a disc.

it's just convenient because a lot of people have blank dvds anyway, and blanks are a bit cheaper than blank mini's

I haven't found any cases less than about $40.  I'll have to keep looking.

A lot of burners won't burn minidiscs and the minidiscs are hard to find locally.  That's why I was never going to back up my games.  I had to tell my kids that they have to ask me to change the games for them, which frankly is a PITA, but at least they haven't wrecked any discs this way.

These guys have a replacement case for $17 or $18.  Divineo has the same case for $20.

The biggest problem with the full size DVD mod for the GC is 1) you don't gain any extra usage by using bigger disks because the lazer is only going to go to the 1.4 gig point... and 2) using bigger disks tends to put a little extra wear and tear on the motor to spin the disks.  The motors in GCs apparently aren't too great.  You can tweak the lazer to try and help it read better, but once your motor starts getting worn out you'll have a lot of problems.

Sonofabitch.  $12 for the XenoGC... I just ordered two somewhere else for $24 each.  Finally decided it was time to take the plunge so my kids can swap the discs themselves.

Will you also need to modchip to get the GC to boot off the full-size disk?

No, but minidvds are cheap now.  Just have to figure out how to back up the games we have.

You can do it with the broadband adapter, at least with the Qoob chips.  My guess is it'll be the same for all chips.

Yeah, the chip I got allows me to back my games up that way but not to stream games to the Cube.  That's fine as I'm not looking to build a library of gamez, just to back up the ones we have so my kids don't trash the discs.
