I was watching TechTV the other night and they demonstrated a hack to control a PCs volume with external hardware. If you have a Sound Blaster Live, you can essentially wire two buttons directly to a header on the board for volume up and down. Here's the link:

Not sure if this has been covered here already, but I haven't come across it before.

Wow, that could really be useful.

soundblaster live value cards lack the headers, but they have the spot for the headers on the pcb (cheap ---daisies---, its probably close to .0005 cent per card). anyways, i was able to set my live value card up for this without too much trouble (just soldered a header onto it)

cheers for the info shame in my cabinet I got a built in sound card might have to put the live from this machine in there now hehe

What that article failed to mention is that if you hit both of the buttons at the same time it will mute/unmute the audio

Hmmm, digital volume control.
Ok now, were can I get digital receiver volume controls? Like on my denon, turn knob right to raise, turn knob left to lower. (push knob to mute would be cool)

Something they also mentioned is that this hack comes from a book about the sound blaster live. It explains the header pins and how to hook various outputs/inputs to non sb compatable equiptment. This would be very nice for people with the fancy cases with audio jacks in the front.

This is exactly what I'm after but unfortunately the link doesn't work any more. Does anyone have a link to this article? I've searched the web but I'm not getting anything.
Cheers.

Cabvol will do the same thing, no hacking required
