There was an article in USA Today about Gary Larson today and it got me thinking - just how great was The Far Side. Then, I figured I'd just ask you guys instead of doing all that thinking.

The Fare Side was very good. Bloom County was the best.
-
I'm not voting. It won't make a difference anyway. ;)
Far Side and Calvin & Hobbes.
The best non-political current one is Dilbert. Political ones vary market to market. We don't have Bloom County out here, just Doonesbury. Sometimes it's funny, most times it ain't.
I find Get Fuzzy to be quite funny.
Marmaduke sucks. Someone needs to kill the woman who draws The Dinette Set. Seriously. That isn't funny. It's never funny. I don't see how any old person can find that funny or even care. It'd be different if they were witty observations. But they aren't. They're just insipid, pointless observations with no real comedic value whatsoever. :banghead: It isn't in our local paper, and never was, thank God. Is it still in the major ones?

To paraphrase Ignignot - "Marmaduke has always sucked."

I love the Far Side, so many brilliant comics. Anyone remember the farside tv special? Great stuff. Another of my favorite comics is Fox Trot, its one of the few (non-online only) comics that often deals with video gaming and technology. Penny-Arcade would be my current favorite of online only comics.

Get Fuzzy is the best thing to happen to the comics page since they removed Nancy!
-
Get Fuzzy is pretty good. My current favorite by far is Monty. Always been a big fan of For Better or Worse. Garfield seems to be ramping up to a serious Garfield-world changing event. Can't remember the name of the one with the two little black kids for some reason... also very good.
Greatness: Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts.
Could have been great but ended too soon: Frumpy the Clown.

Two far side comics I remember:
1) The translation of a dog's bark (they all mean "hey!")
2) The picture of a person trying to push open a door which says "Pull" and happens to be the front entrance to a school for gifted children.

Calvin and Hobbes is great. They have two collected volumes at my wife's prenatal doctor's office. Everyone looks at me funny when I laugh (which is often). The snowman ones are the best ever. If you haven't seen them, go look them up.
Foxtrot is pretty darn good, especially for nerds like us. ;) ;D

The Far Side WAS greatness, but the formula has been copied and refined so much over the last 15-20 years that by today's standards, it could be considered "hit or miss"...
-
Still great... so great that it was copied so often and so ineffectively that low quality Far Side clones have become a cliche. That is REAL greatness.

1. Far Side
2. Calvin & Hobbes
3. Bloom County
Best of "today"?
1. Fox Trot
2. Get Fuzzy
3. Non Sequitur
Your opinion may suck vary ;)
