I have set up a keywiz eco in my sons mame cab.....all went smoothly
I forgot about the Esc key.
I am used to ipac2 and ipac4 which use P1 + P2 = Esc
I played my first game in his cab then hit P1 + P2 and nothing.......damn I forgot its a keywiz not an ipac
My question is:
Is there a simple way to get Esc happening with a Keywiz eco... Can i program it or something so that P1 + P2 = Esc?
If I have to run an app on PC startup to reprogram it each time that doesnt phase me, I just dont like the idea of pulling apart my wireing loom to add a shazaaam and esc key
Bugger
Please help

I am not an expert by any means, as timoe put mine together. From what he told me, you have to use what is called the shazaam button for these functions. Its not like in an ipac where you push p1 and p2 and get escape. The way mine works, you hold the shazaam button which I assume he setup and hit a predefined key for whatever function. It seems pretty similar to the way you would do an ipac but a little different. I remember Tim saying that the keywiz doesn't store different key settings when you power off like the ipac and this was one of the reasons why it had to been done with the shazaam button.
Anyway some of what I said may be off a little, but I think I got the just of it. I would go to the site and look at the manual though for specifics however.

Or you could program teh key combiniation in Mame's software.

Hoagie_one has the simplest solution, but I wouldn't pick the P1+P2 combo as it isn't the best choice.
As has been pointed out on numerous occasions, in the heat of 2-player simultaneous games, players can lose their last lives and both reach for the start buttons as the same time to continue. This would result in exiting the game.
Use a combo that only P1 is in charge of and is unlikely to happen by mistake. Perhaps, P1 Start and P1 button 6 and/or 7 (a 3 button combo is even more secure)
But if you really want to, you can pretty closely simulate the behavior you are used to;
Hook both the Shazaaam! and the P1 Start input to the P1 Start Button. Then upload a custom codeset to the KeyWiz with the "Shazaaam!" key for the P1 Start input set to "1" and the "Shazaaam!" key for the P2 Start set to "ESC".
The one drawback of using this method is that the "1" key will be sent before any of the shifted ones, but unless the game is sitting there waiting for you to start, this will be ignored. So the net result is the behavior you are used to with little to no side-effects.

Thanks to all above
I would prefer not to hook up any more wires (i would have to undo the loom I made) So if i can get around this by programming MAME i would prefer that.
I will edit mame to remap P1(start) + P1(b3) - That should work for most issues
Done...........thanks for the advice. P1(start)+P1(3) = Esc works a dream

Hey Randy,
On a somewhat similar note: did you get that updated Keywiz programming software out there yet?

careful mapping the UI Esc option in mame.
I accidently hit Esc=Enter. You need enter a bit in the mame <Tab> menu. So when i remapped Esc= Enter everytime i tried to "enter" a new menu option I escaped.......... Couldn't fix it without copying over c:\mame :dizzy:
