Sorry for the vague subject line.
I have been going through all the mame roms (1.09, i believe) and making myself a handful of game lists. I was wondering...
1. When I get done, would anyone be interested in them?
2. Is it possible to share the .mlg files, or would the rom versions have to match exactly for the lists to work on someone else's computer?
3. These are the categories I'm using so far, what am I missing?
- Classics
- Fighters
- Light Gun
- Puzzle
- Racing
- Shooters (includes both horiz and vert)
- Side Scrollers (games like TMNT, Double Dragon, etc)
- Simulation
- Spinner
- Sports
- Trackball
Of course, the games that I choose may differ from what you may choose, but it would be a starting place for someone. What I've been doing is going through the list one game at a time, and adding only the games that either stand out, or bring something new to the lists.
Let me know your thoughts.
BTW: When I get done with mame, I'm going to have to do the same with the other emus, but since there is the potential of different naming schemes, it would probably be alot harder to share.

I might be interested. How about "vertical classics"
-
Makes sense for those with vertical cabinets. I also added a list called "Kids Games", with the hopes of having some games that are a little easier for my children.

What a great Idea. ;)
I have a vertical setup and would love a list. Do Post :-)

I would be very interested in the screen shots. I've made most of my game lists (where are your flying games?), but playing all the games just so I can take screenshots is annonying (have to use the keyboard, etc). Would you be willing to share your screenshots or offer any advice to make this a bit more efficient?

???
I'll PM you

I suppose by "flying games" I may be referring to those as "Shooters" (or SHMUPS).
The nice thing about Mala is that once the lists are made up, it is a great start for others to fine tune them to their own needs (with Malagamelist.exe).

I am almost done making Mala game lists for controller type
Trackball
Spinner
8-Way
4-Way
3&4 Player Games
Buttons Only
Dual 4 way
Dual 8 way
I know I could filter these but I am focusing on working games 'US' if possible. I will offer them up also when finished.

Thats cool. We can come up with a repository eventually. But I'm still curious about there being any version issues? Or will this not be a problem, since the rom names should all be common?

I think this is a great idea. Count me in. I never thought that the files could be shared. I did the same thing, but just kept a list of the games I liked (863 out of 6000 plus) ;D
It would nice to have these types of lists available for download somewhere ::)

That would be the easy part, as I happen to have a full web server that I can host just about anything on. And I have some domain names set aside for this kind of stuff.

Im interested
-
What is the format for Mala game lists? This could end up being "cross platform"...
-
I'm planning on making a portable control panel as a christmas gift, and I would love to have a couple of these lists set up for that. The less they have to mess around with stuff, the less stuff they can mess up.
-
I'm setting up a website right now to act as a repository for these files. I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Great idea!!

Wouldn't it just be better to get a filtered view enabled for catver.ini or mcm.ini? Then you could sort by genres and more. (I might be overlooking something here though)
-
Well, personally, I may have a differnet idea of what genre a game fits in. That's why todays FE's have more customizable game list options.
And besides, but going through the whole list, I've discovered some games I may have never found before.
But where this will really help out with, is the other console emus. Even if the rom archive names don't match, it should still save a lot of time for people by having a list of names.

Doh, you can save game lists.....i just wiped my system for a fresh install
A great idea. Count me in

Screenshots, am I missing something here? That is what the Snaps dir for mame is for. I have my snaps dir populated from the DVD's I got with my roms. It's a screenshot if each game or should say 80% of them. Is this what you're talking about?
-
I am all for it =) :applaud:
Oh BTW how about 4-player catigory
-
In the game lists I am working on I have a 3 & 4 Player Group. I work in retail so don't expect anything in the next week, black friday and all..... :troll:

Doesn't Mala use catlist?
-
I believe so. But as mentioned above, I've noticed a lot of people still going through the whole rom list and categorizing the games themselves. This was never ment to be a new "standard" of categories. Simply an idea to share lists, so someone could have a good start. Also, I imagine this will be a good way for us to discover some games we may have not know about before.
As for the website, its just about done. I ad Swindus look at it to get a "stamp of approval", and he is all for it. I'm also setting up a place to upload and download Mala layouts, since they are so customizable, and relatively easy to manipulate. I've seen some great ideas out there, but this will help share the goodness.

Doesn't Mala use catlist?
Yes. You can create game lists with the information from the catver.ini file or you can use the information to filter the displayed list on the fly without creating extra game lists.
-
How do you use the catlist to create game lists in Mala? I checked the help section at Mameworld and couldn't find anything...

You let mala know where the files are...
Then filter with malagamelist.exe
See pics attached

Now that you have finished up that christmas gift, did you ever have a chance to finalize that website?
-
Sorry to dig up an old post but whatever became of this website and gamelists??
Cheers,
Simon.
-
i want the lists too :)
... i am discovering a lot of clasics now actually
i have a good 'kids fun' list
instead of hunting own a separate websi, why not allow mlg file uploads to the mala wiki instead, and have a page listing them?

I had to take the website down for other reasons. But I'd be happy to put it back up. I don't think anyone was using it, really.

If you want to make game lists very fast and very easy, try using romlister. I made something like 40 lists in about 20-25 minutes.
http://www.waste.org/~winkles/ROMLister
You can easily create lists based on category, controls, players, orientation, or just about anything in catlist.ini, mame.xml, and controls.xml.
The interesting thing about uploading lists would be to see other peoples favorite games list.
-
yep favorite games would be great... maybe just attach the files HERE! dont need another site just for this...
