I think it's safe to assume that being in prison had something to do with the amount of empty space dude had.

Jeez....the last line "A person answering the phone at the jail Friday night did not know whether Sheehan had a lawyer." Think he may need a lawyer AND a doctor.

I'm guessing that's one of those guys who break in prison and when they get out decide immediately that they need to be put back in.  An awl would be worth a lot of money in the can.
