Title: question on vector game graphics
Post by: twitami on November 06, 2006, 01:25:33 am
So, since I don't think I can find a Monitor the size I need that will run at 800x600, I may have have to use a TV in my cabinet. I hooked up a spare TV to test things out, and it looks pretty good actually. The only problem is Vector games..they are horrible. ANyone had any luck using TVs in your cab and playing Tempest? (or any other Vector game...thats just what I was testing with).

Nope.  (IMHO) TVs look like crap when trying to display vector graphics.  Vector graphics look best on a pc monitor at a resolution of at least 1024x768.  In MAME you will need to adjust the line width (the "beam") to whatever you think looks good.

Well, when they're not actually on a vector monitor, yes.

I've actually gotten them to look quite decent on a TV after some tweaking.  I will check out my settings when I get home and post them here.

Well, here's my vector.ini:

### vector.ini ###

screen0                 \\.\Display1\Unit0
full_screen_gamma       1.3
full_screen_contrast    1.2
contrast                1.25
gamma                   1.2
antialias               0

Turning up the contrast and gamma helped immensely in horizontal vector games like Major Havok and Aztarac.
The vertical vector games like Tempest didn't end up as good (much better than stock though), but here's my tempest.ini:

### tempest.ini ###

### Options ###

video                   d3d
full_screen_gamma       2.4
full_screen_contrast    1.4
screen0                 \\.\Display1\Unit0
resolution0             640x480x0@0
contrast                1.4
gamma                   2.05
antialias               1
