Title: Pine Princess carves GameRoom Magazine Logo!!...
Post by: Donkey_Kong on November 03, 2006, 10:03:09 pm
Her orginal carvings are going for $75-$125 depending on the piece. Detail, size, etc...

She has castings as well that are running a flat rate of $50 painted, or $40 a piece for 2 or more. The 3 Barrels are considered 1 piece so you save $$ there.

Her art is kind of spendy but it is really cool stuff. She puts alot of work into EVERY piece and she deserves every penny that she gets back. Thing is is that we actually have a lot of money invested into this now in the way of tools and molding/casting supplies. Melissa is definitely in the red on this endeavor. If you have contemplated picking up a piece or two of her castings or carvings...Now is a good time. She could really use some confidence orders right about now.

davieboynj

Where did that one come from? DK flyer or something?

I'm not going to disagree that yours is better in some ways...especially in authenticity to the original game of all games. On the other hand for my application the newer "Mario hammer smash" art is going to work better. Thats allz I can say for now. I'm adding your clip to my small but ever growing collection for a future project though...THANKS!!

Well here is the final for my side art...I don't know how my wife pulled this stuff off but she carved it out of pine wood. Pretty cool of her to do this for my cab project. I'm sure once we get closer to being done with the whole project we will post up some more pictures and stuff.

Here it is...

I'm pretty sure she will do more to order. Obviously she would be willing to try some different characters as well...Send her some digital art + dimensions and she could quote prices on a per order basis for now. PM would work good for now...

My stuff is done so...she's all yours  :laugh2:  JK hun!!

EDIT: To give you an idea...Her current art dimensions are as follows

DK   16"x10"x1" Pine
Mario  14"x8"x1" Pine
Pacman  11"x10"x1" Pine
Ghost  8"x8"x1" Pine

Hint: The more detail that your character has will require it to be larger in size for best results. For example we learned that Mario should have been a little bigger. DK is just right as he turned out well. If you went smaller with DK you might start losing the crazy detail. Pacman is just right and the ghost is cool. The ghost has a bit of a paint issue that won't happen again as well.

Donkey-Kong, A suggestion, if your wife is actually interested in selling these, then you should look at making molds of your existing characters and then casting new ones out of resin.  You could make lots of them, of very high quality, without it taking too much of your time.  Otherwise, either they will be too expensive, or they won't be worth your wife's time to carve.  Good luck  :)

They make my ideas about painting characters on the wall in the game room feel like an amateurs idea. Now I have to go and by myself a chisel (well probably more than one). I tell my wife it is your wife's fault that our money went to tools instead of food :-)

I comitted the cardinal sin and brought my cab in the house at about neh 70% done. I'm telling you I couldn't stand it no more. Had to play it!!  Also, given the interest that was struck by my wifes side art...I figured you guys might want a peek at what this big pine box looks like. (pinebox wtf?)

I know this thing is pretty far out in left field when compared to a traditional cab...Just bare with us though. Obviously there is a bunch more work to do and there is gonna be one more big surprise for the grand finally on this thing before she's done. The surprise will be in the area of where traditional cab would be t-mold. Also, something to wrap up the wide permeter of the CP a little better. I actually don't know what to do on the marque yet. I'm sure my wife will come up with something there. A name would help. Been trying to think of one for awhile and got notta. I kept thinking pine something. Every spec of wood including all artwork on this thng is pine. My kid says "Pinewood Paradise". I kinda like it unless you got somethin better...

Here she is so far...

Very smooth. I like it a lot. When the bazel and other details are done, it'll be really cool. I personally love wood-grain cabs. My cocktail, which will be done by Sunday (I hope), is oak.

I really love the wooden characters around the screen. It just looks like something I'd put coins in at the arcade.

What kind of joys did you use? Are those Mag-Stick plus with ball top?

Name...how about the Spruce Excuse? (yes Honey its furniture!...although she seems to be as into it as you!  Too cool.)

My wife put me in charge of the less technical 2d bezel carvings. I'm kinda proud of my little dudes. Some of them turned out cool but a far cry from what she can pull off. She knew she would have to give me one of those tasks that are really time consuming but pretty much mindless. This was to keep me out of her way while she worked her magic on her 3D pieces. It worked out good for both of us.

Name Options (need more) so far:
Pinewood Paradise
Spruce Excuse
Woody Kong
Bouncy Barrels
Donkey Paradise

Would like to really thank everybody for the compliments on the wife's artwork. She appreciates it as well. I hope someday soon she can get her own BYOAC account and tell you herself but now she is busy carving more stuff for fellow forum members, so who knows when she will get to it. She started two more Donkey Kongs today!

Edit: My friend Tommi from Twin Galaxies added to the name list...

Verrrry nice... I'd recommend against doing something (like the molds) with which you could mass produce them.  The carvings are awesome and unique.  Making them out of plastic would make them less unique feeling and probably get the attention of some people who wouldn't like your doing it.

The wood carvings are sweet.  Very nice.
Title: Re: Pinewood Princess Carvings
Post by: Donkey_Kong on December 04, 2006, 07:21:41 pm
Chad- I think I agree partially with what you are saying. On the other hand though I don't think my wifes operation could really ever be considered MASS production, each piece would still be hand painted (1-2 hours just in paint for each piece) Also, molding her carvings will be the only way she would really ever be able to produce enough for how many people want them. It takes her about 4-6 hours to carve each piece depending on the detail and size, then you add in paint time and now you are at 8 hours per piece. She would have carpel tunnel in no time flat at that pace. Basically molding these pieces will be the only feasible way to realistickly deliver these in a reasonable amount of time or quantity what-so-ever.

Also, I believe what she is doing molding or not, as either way is her own piece of art, is really pretty mild compared to like say somebody pushing clik on the print button and popping off a few dozen copies of some original vinyl print side art...Another comparison could be an artist doing his very own  original rendition of say this plumber/carpenter for example, that just so happens to look like this Mario plumber/carpenter that all of us game heads know dang good and well who it is. Said artisit then proceeds to print neee...100 or maybe 1000 copies with the click of a mouse and proceeds to sell the renditions for dollars. That my friend in my book would be considered mass production. Now had he hand painted each and every one of those 100 or 1000 copies...different story.

Chad, I understand what you are saying and appreciate the compliments...Bottom line is that we will have more happy campers if we mold the pieces and then hand paint them. She will be able to actually deliver this way and not suffer physically in doing so. The price will be significantly cheaper and the cost of the carved wood will probably go up. By the way, I succesfully molded for the very first time last night one of her recent carvings and the result was really, really cool!! We are excited!! Please don't try to burst our bubbles...not just yet anyway!!

Update for Melissa.

She is back at it with pretty good force. More so for painting cast as of late rather than carving. Yesterday morning we had a reading of -42 degrees actual just to the North of us. She cannot and will not work in the garage in these conditions. Everything will break including her, me thinks.

Not all bad news though. Melissa has worked diligently on another HUGE custom carving order for BYOAC member MameMaster! I have included some pics of his stuff as well as some other members.

If you have an order in progress with Melissa currently she will be finishing them this week. Specifically Jim and SodaPop and NH from another forum. If you are interested, everythinig you see pictured are either carved wood and amongst are alot of castings as well. She will be available from here on out to paint castings. PM for details!

Thanks guys!!

For now though. On the casting tip. EVERYTHING you see in this pic is molded plus a few more actually.

I comitted the cardinal sin and brought my cab in the house at about neh 70% done.

Whew - for a minute there, I was guessing the sin was using WINDOWS as front end  ;D

I think those characters are awesome, and they work well on a stained wood finish!  I would have never thought of doing that.  I've always liked the idea of staining a wood cab, then having a metal sheet cut out, raised slightly, and neon backlit so that I had 'sideart' with a modern flair.  Good ideas here though!

I agree with the casting comment above.  I'd like a frogger to have a wall decoration, and the pacman was cool as well.  I think ebay might have a small market for this kind of thing too, something  to definately look into if it's affordable for casts to be created.

Thanks for sharing!

:'(   It is sad cause we were just getting warmed up. Hopefully this passes soon though. IF YOU HAVE PAID FOR A PROJECT IT WILL GET DONE SOON! Otherwise I will be putting up an auto responder for her website contact.

Thanks for the overall support and all that jazz guys!   :applaud:

Jason & Melissa,

I hope that things turn around for you and you are able to get back up and running.  Think about offering castings as a do it yourself kit.  At least you can still do the castings Jason even if Melissa can't paint them.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments. I am trying to make time to finish all the projects that I have started and I should have some good progress on them this week. So if you are waiting for an order, it shouldn't be too long. As for new orders I am putting them off for a little while so that we can get moved and settled in. We will let everyone know when we are ready to start taking more orders. I want to get back to carving every day asap, I miss it! Just give us a little time, we are overwhelmed right now with these drastic changes in our life.

Thank you for understanding!  :)

Thanks Jim! Melissa is getting back to you on the other carving requests right now. We also found some really cool hose today for the Dig Dug Scene. It is way better than what is pictured above.

EDIT: Here is a shot of the new hose. She will take some diameter from the Pooka attachment point to accommodate the new hose.

Hey Jason,

I responeded to Melissa's PM with details on the BurgerTime and Mr. Do! projects.  I'm not
sure if it went through.  I also sent her an email with the details at her   .........kitemn.com
address.  Let me know if you guys didn't receive either of them.

Thanks,

Jim T.
