Title: Can I do anything cool with these
Post by: taternutz on October 30, 2006, 05:05:41 pm
I purchased the 2 guns for steelgunner 2 and was wondering if I could do something cool with them, or just use the as decorations in my sons arcade based bedroom.

You can use them to play Steel Gunner, Terminator 2, Operation Wolf, Crossbow, Chiller, and other similar games.  Hook 'em up with an A-Pac, an AKI, or a DualStrike hack.

They will work with a tv screen, pc screen, lcd, arcade monitor or even no screen whatsoever.  Positional guns are not light guns.  They don't "look" at the screen at all.  Positional guns are really analog joysticks in disguise; they use two potentiometers to provide x/y co-ordinates to the game, and that's where your shot registers.  Theoretically, you could play Star Wars (yoke = 2 potentiometers) or Afterburner (analog flight stick = 2 potentiometers) with these as well.

So could I wire them up to a mole and have that going into my IPAC, and just plug the connectors together when I want to use them?

Thanks

These guns use analog potentiometers. They're used for any mounted gun game like the ones Kremmit mentioned. They all work the same. You can almost think of these guns as fancy analog flight sticks with a cool gun-shaped casing. These are recognized within MAME as analog joystick-based games.

However, any gun that you pull out of a holster and hold in your own two hands is a seperate kind of game. Those would require an Act Labs gun (or something of the sort). These are recognized within MAME as mouse-based games.

Recognize the difference?

I'm using very similar guns using a Dual Strike hack.  I also built a board (http://www.rototron.info/?Page=Recoil.aspx) to run the recoil solenoids in the guns.

Took a look at your board. All I can say is WOW. You ever thought about getting with one of the bigger vendors on here and developing a reproducable model??

I tried sales once with my rotary interfaces (http://www.rototron.info?Page=RI.aspx) and it just took too much time and was not very profitable.  Besides I prefer to provide the plans and code for all my projects free.  This reminds me...  I need to finish a my new gun system that has been sitting on the drawing board for about a year.  Also, looking back at the recoil board, I see that it could be  substantially simplified with some code modifications.
