Title: Wacky idea: Cue Cat
Post by: rampy on March 25, 2003, 03:48:49 pm
While rummaging through some boxes I found my cue cat from wired magazine (or radio shack)... hopefully you are familiar with the cue cat saga or this won't make much sense)

I wonder if the cue cat could be used in conjunction with a "front end" to make it so people could just scan the "bar code" of the game they would want...

yeah... so it's a stupid idea, and i have no intention of doing it... but wanted to tap the collective intelligence of byoac for ideas of what to do with my cue cat =P  Maybe it could be some sort of new arcade control.... or not...

You got a cue cat?!!   :o

I can't tell you how hard I tried to get one of those when they were giving them away. Just missed the boat every time...   :P

Maybe you could put the barcodes of your favorite games in your monitor bezel or side art. Then people could scan and play...

I really can't imagine how else you'd make it work... *shrug*   ::)

Maybe it would be good for a "mystery game party" print flyers with barcodes on them (or better yet, drink coasters... ;), pass them out to guests and have them scan n' play...

Really!   ;D  Is it the USB or parallel ps/2 connection type? Where are you located? (Just wondering if it's worth it for what the freight will cost me)  :)

(Guess my memory is a little rusty...)

you do know why cue cat failed, right?

BTW, it was cool scanning stuff around the aprtment, seeing if the cue cat recognized it and take you to the manufacturer's webpage.

Yeap! I was originally trying to get ahold of one beause we were considering setting up a barcode system at work and we are too cheap to buy R&D hardware...   ;D

If I can get one now, I'll use it to catalog my cd collection or something. Rampy's got the wheels turning again in my head...   8)  I actually like my mystery game party idea!  heheh    ::)

Theres programs that let you use the cuecat to catalog your CDs, DVDs, books, ETC...you scan it in and it finds out all sorts of information about it from the web.  And when you let a friend borrow it, you scan it in again and it will remind you later about getting it back... I picked up a couple of the cuecats too when they were free, but never really used them--  I wonder where they are now?

anywho, link is fixed, I was pretty sure that my collection was public, but obviously not!?

oh, is it only admins that get an option to edit their posts - seems silly that I couldn't go back and edit the one I just posted...?

But guys, the nice thing about the cuecats is that you can hack them and send their input wherever you want.  This is a feasable idea rampy.  Are you saying that you would have a huge list of arcade games on a piece of paper with barecodes next to each one?  And then scanning any of them would result in the frontend launching that game?  That is totally doable :)
