Title: Where is everyone?
Post by: whynotpizza on October 26, 2006, 08:30:37 pm
Is it me, or are folks not writing on the boards much lately?

Could it be we are all rivoted on TV with the world series? I think not.  :laugh2:

Just curious why new posts per day seem quite low.

There have been some problems with the boards lately, which has contributed some, I believe.

And then you have the fact that missioncontrol still can't log in. There goes 100 posts per day.  :laugh2:

I have noticed that posts per day seemed to take a nose dive right after the board problems. No one else mentioned it so I thought maybe I was hallucinating.  :dizzy:

And the main board feels empty without the new guys all posting "Hello World" or asking how to solder 2 wires together without opening a portal to the Netherlands. Ya complain when they're here, ya complain when they leave.

And doesn't it feel like after a post has been talked about a few days, everyone but me seems to deny that post exists anymore? And you hate to bump back really old topics but you still think about em and wonder why everyone abandoned em?

I think it's been dead well before the board problems.  I remember a time when today's topics extended past the first page of the 'main' board.  Now, you can usually see 3 days worth of posts on the first page.   :'(

I've been informed that he's written a scathing response to this on masking tape and stuck it to his screen.

So there.

Maybe the wikki is answering the questions so they do not have to be asked over and over again.
Or perhaps the searches are giving some of the answers before the questions are posted.
Or it could be the depletion of the ozone layer   :dunno

Hey if you'd ever succeed in doing that, can you shove some cabs to that portal ? :D

I assumed when the wiki was started, that a lot of the activity of the board would go down. Most of the old activity was mostly people asking questions that had been answered, over and over and over. The wiki (for the most part) covers in detail a huge range of topics.

I personally don't post much because I've become super busy, but also because I don't see so many blatantly obvious questions anymore that can be easily answered with links or a few lines of text. The remainder of questions is a lot more specific than it used to be.

Just disappointed with coming to BYOAC with all the problems lately.  This was one of my highest frequented boards, but lately, it just has too many problems.  Speed of pages loading, not logging in, waiting for pages to load, etc.  Sorry to see one of my all time fav's disappear, but it's getting lower and lower on the list.

Aren't the technical issues for people resolved now?

I think that is definitely part of the problem.

I was bumped off for 10 days.  During that time, I joined another forum.   I haven't spent much time there either, however, because I'm just busy with real-life.  That being said, I got a bit frustrated not being able to log on over those ten days so at the point I finally got back on, I ended up spending less time here.

I also think that there's a snowball effect where things decrease logarithmically.  The fewer people posting, the fewer responses.  If a bunch of regular posters are suddenly unable to access the site, they're not going to post things that other people would have otherwise replied to and, therefore, significantly fewer posts.   Losing 10 regulars is going to result in more than just their posts disappearing from the count.

Aren't the technical issues for people resolved now?

I wouldn't be so sure about that, but it's likely we wouldn't even know.   But there is still a 'news' item at the top of the forum that says "SYSTEM DIFFICULTIES", so I figure it's not all fixed just yet

Hell, I don't even know if all the previously exiled members are back in.   Also there was talk about how new memberships weren't working.   And, afaik, there's still a problem there.    When my login disappeared from the system, I tried setting up a new account under a similar name.   It never worked.  Password problems, login problems etc.  I tried resetting the password and it made things even worse.  So, afaik, most of the 197 new memberships since the beginning of Oct still haven't been able to ever log in.

Over the last year, there have been between 195 and 488 new members joining every month.   Obviously some of those people are going to post.  When they post, people respond etc etc etc

There were 13,000 new posts made in the month of Sept.   So far (with only a couple days left) there have been 9662 new posts.  So we're down by about 25%.    That is, if the stats page is actually accurate, and I don't know if it is.  My personal stats still claim I'm averaging 3644 posts per day, and clearly that's not the case so I don't know if there have really been 9662 posts made this month.

The place certainly does seem quiet and, according to the stats, October isn't nearly as active as previous months.

I know what mighe make ME post more, though.    An announcement from 1UP about the new lower-priced Spincades that he hinted about.  :)

EDIT:  It appears that there are still issues and maybe not everybody's back in yet.   Grasshopper posted the following today in the Forum Discussion group:
It looks like there are still some unresolved issues. I just tried to send another member a PM and I got a message saying the member didn't exist.  :dunno

That 25% loss can be entirely attributed to the fact that MC cannot make any posts.

for me this was THE forum to post to. pretty much my first experience with forums (other than a rather short lived go at an RC car forum, man those guys are snobs!). but lately ive discovered the joys of emulation on handhelds- that is to say ive bought a gp2x. so ive been checking out THAT forum too. AND ive become a member of an aussie arcade forum.

also i was sick a few months ago and afterwards i was getting vertigo from looking at the screen. so i actually had DAYS without even switching on the puter!  :o . now im better and i guess ive calmed down on the posting. although ive emabrked on a new project so that may change...

Yo, Bones stop posting pic's of hot chicks bent over with that look on their face. Its causing me trouble with my focus and cab building. ( I was going to finish my cab today until now).

I haven't posted in a while because all my progress has been in saving money for materials. I need one more piece of oak plywood and a 2 1/2 trackball. :blah:

I am here.  I usually read through some of the posts each day.  I will be working on my cab some tonight.  I am going to sand and then use the leaf blower to blow it clean.  Then I will bring it in the house.  I still have two panel pieces to screw in, but I need to get it in.  It is getting too cold in the garage to work.
