In Mala (RC8), if I keep the keyboard's DOWN or UP key depressed, the menu scrolls. However, if I hold the joystick DOWN or UP, the menu just stops at the next item. ??? I am using a PS/2 IPAC (keyboard pass-through) so the repeat (Typematic) should not be the issue. Never saw this before RC6...
Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using the same keyboard mapping? I-pac does not do auto scrolling on all imputs.
From the website: http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac5.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/ipac5.html)
What about key-repeat (Typematic)?
In USB mode key repeat is supported as on a normal keyboard and is handled by the PC. In PS/2 mode key repeat is not generally desirable for gaming because sending unnecessary strings of key-presses to the PC can cause unwanted clutter on the PS/2 interface and steal CPU cycles. It is useful though to have key repeat outside of gaming, for example for scrolling up and down game lists in a front end. The I-PAC solves this problem by implementing a selective repeat on up/down only, for scrolling through lists. If you have a need for repeat on all inputs, this can be supplied on request.

IPAC jumpers are still on default MAME setting and UP/DOWN truly map to UP/DOWN when I test them.

I must admit I have not tried RC8 on my Cab (with I-pac) yet, but on my main PC in scrolls fine with the up/down arrow. I will try later
-
I've tested this in other FE's and apps, and the same problem appears there as well. Not sure what could cause this result from the Ipac unless the Ipac itself is going bad. (emailing Andy now)

Sorry Dude I forgot to test it on my cab... :-[
I just did then and scrolling works fine on RC8.

Mystery solved ... Andy emailed me back and enlightened me. Older IPAC boards did not have any key repeat at all. Mamewah implements auto-repeat in the list by itself, so I just got use to having it. When I switched over to MaLa, the problem occurred.
My choices are buy a new IPAC or stick with MameWah for now it seems.
-
You could ask Andy if these cheaper upgrade chips will solve the problem.

DOH! I am in the same boat as you with an original IPAC/PS2 & MaLa and was just going to post the same question. Thanks for saving me the effort!
(I wonder if Swindus is following this thread............) ;)

I asked and the $12 upgrade chip for the old I-PAC does have the key-repeat feature. I went ahead an ordered one :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread...
I'm currently migrating my frontend setup from AdvanceMenu to Mala. Very happy so far. However, this scrolling thing is the only issue I have so far. AdvanceMenu must have implemented it's own scrolling somehow because it worked w/ my PS/2 IPAC. Is it possible to add this feature to Mala? I wonder if AdvanceMenu did it's own scrolling by handling up/down events?

Did the repeat key feature ever get added to Mala?
I just ran into the same problem as the other users with my Ipac 4.
Found this thread with hopes someone has come up with a fix since April.

My MAME cab development has all but stalled lately, but I still browse these forums & my to-do list of neat features is growing, so that means my goal is getting farther away... :\
Anyway, from this & other threads, it sounds as if using a dial spinner is a good way to go for scrolling through games in the MaLa list. I've got 2 spinners on my cab. I should be able to set 1 up to scroll through game-by-game & the other to scroll through letter-by-letter, without having to worry about repeat & acceleration & all that stuff, yah?
Thanks,
-J

Yes, a spinner certainly helps, although the current version does not spin through the list very fast. I wished it went as fast as I spun the spinner.

??? Have you tried playing with the mouse settings
-
Or spinning your spinner slower? ;D
-
??? Have you tried playing with the mouse settings
Yes of course. Even with acceleration enabled (9 or less works with v1.0 RC9), it's still does not come close to matching the speed of the spinner. After about 1/4 spinner speed, Mala pretty much ignores anything faster. If memory serves properly, Mamewah and Gamelauncher were the fastest with spinner scrolling.

What sort of spinner have you got. I may have to get one and have a play

I use 2 SlikStik spinners (http://www.slikstik.com/webstore/webstore.asp?productid=SS%20SPINNER&category=84). I love how you can use a jumper to designate X or Y axis. (Set them up like an etchi-sketch) This makes it easy to have 2 spinners working in MAME.

Ordering now ;D

Now that I think of it, sure would be cool if Mala had the option to scroll through the list with 1 mouse axis, and page through the list with the other mouse axis. But I would settle for more scrolling speed :)
-
You can use one axis to scroll one game or a page through the list when you use the MaLa 'Shift' key as described here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=69744.0

Oh yeah ....even this setting in MaLa ?

...I'm still waiting for my Spinner.. Sounds like a cool way to go through game lists. I may even use it for Games ;)
And [edit] Katana [/edit] Man you should get yourself a Avitar... :-)

I've had some scrolling issues in Mala as well. I can turn the scrolling acceleration up to about 10 or 11, and it works fine. If I set it higher though, It'll scroll through maybe 6 or 7 games, then stop until I release the stick. And 10 or 11 isn't particularly fast.

I just made a little Plug-In that repeats set Keys while in the MaLa Menu. ;D
If you would like to test a beta version of this Plug-in PM me the key(s) you need repeated to enable scrolling in mala.
The keys need set are hard coded at the moment until tests reveal all is OK.
Thanks
-
The test version attached scrolls the up and down keys. Well on my test bench anyway.
Please give feedback.
Ohh Yeah. It needs MaLa RC9 or above to work

Ok. Fired up my PS/2 Ipac 4 connection and installed the plugin to Mala 1.04.
It didn't work at first, so I went into Options and played a bit.
I found that I had to uncheck GUI/ OPTIONS/ Display delay (Scrolling)
Once that was unchecked I did get the key repeat feature to work.
Unfortunately, it skips 2 games at a time.
I tried changing the key polling to different settings and still couldn't get it to scroll one game at a time.
I was never able to get it to work with Display Delay (scrolling) even when changing the ms of the delay.
Its getting there. Just needs some tweaking.

Ahhhh.
Thanks for the tip on display delay :).. That explains the inconsistency on my Cab compared to the set-up in here.
Back to the lab >:D
Good to know it's working with a Ipac4. I was using an older Ipac2 to test
The speed and amount of scrolling I knew about, that can be fixed later with some options. ;D
-
Hey loadman, it looks like I'm in the same boat as the rest of the fellows with older IPAC boards here. I'm currently using Game Launcher and that must be setting its own key repeat. I'd like to add my name to the list of people hoping for a customizable solution. This really is the one thing that will prevent me from using MaLa.
Guys, if there's anyone else out there interested, please post here.

pretty please could you pull that thumb out :) its the only thing that annoys me about mala, you were 99% there with that last file you put out, just the scroll 2 games at a time that was wrong. :):)

;D I know, I have to finish my first batch of JukeBox Plugin's too! :dizzy:
-
I'm taking a break from my work on a JukeBox Plug-in to crack this nut..
I gotta be close right :o
-
wooo!! :D cant wait.

I am having the same problem on my cocktail cab. Mala is great especially for the rotate screen feature for cocktail owners. However the up and down keys not scrolling is definitely an issue.
Loadman you mentioned that you were almost there with a patch...has any progress been made.
Any help is appreciated.
All the Best
-
Yep.
But the plan has changed
It won't be a Plug-in, It will be an additional option to the main MaLa code. ;)
-
That is good news...any idea when this might be availible...
-
*Bump* for a little suggestion to please add this to MaLa. It's much needed...well...for me at least.
-
No need to bump. ;)
It's on the list
I do what I can for MaLa when I can :)

There is a way to get around this issue that I discovered last night using Autohotkey. Once I get home this evening I'll post the script code for it (it's very basic) to essentially make it function properly in FrontEnds while still working correctly in emulators.
