Computer Geeks has joysticks for $1.60

The colors are not too cool and the buttons click pretty loud, but these sticks can be used with one of the Raider Pro conversions like:

There are some variations of this conversion which include a way to prevent the stick from rotating, using a stainless steel tube for the shaft...

THAT JOYSTICK = POO. I bought one for the curiosity of hacking it, but thought against it since the stick was so flimsy.
Doing the trigger-stick hack involves a fair amount of work; enough that I wouldn't want to use inferior parts for it.

I don't wish to defend this stick because it is such a poor PC flight stick. What else can you expect for $1.60? However, it is only as flimsy as the joystick that it's attached to. The conversion only uses the handles, switches, and joystick mount. However, note that the switches click louder than cherry microswitches.
I'm actually using the Raider Pro, which is a little bigger but harder to find (they usually go for about $10). However, the Raider is very similar and will mount the same way. I'm using a Happ Competition (Happ part# 50-6070-16) with the addition of its heavy spring (Happ part# 95-1309-01) as my joystick.
The arcade conversion is quick and easy (it might take you about a half an hour to complete). You will need some more parts to make it a working arcade stick (a Happ Competition or a Happ Super joystick, a metal shaft, and drill stop). What makes this such an easy conversion is that the joystick mount accepts a 3/8" shaft (0.375 inches). Since Happ Competitions and Supers have 10mm shafts (0.3937 inches), a replacement 3/8" shaft is acceptable (only 0.0187" too small). I used a 3/8" stainless steel tube so the wires can be fed through the shaft. Also, instead of using the e-clip, I used a 3/8" drill stop. Tip: drill two holes in the shaft (instead of one) that match up with the holes in the joystick mount (this should make the stick more sturdy).
I was looking for a stick with a trigger and a thumb switch; these are getting harder to find as today's PC sticks seem to have 4 or more buttons on the stick itself. I was also looking for a stick that is both left and right handed.
However, I'd appreciate other options since the clicking is somewhat annoying.

Hard to find sticks... tell me about it.
I've just been on a rampage (hmm, I think I'll go play some Rampage) trying to find the translucent Raider Pros. I won one auction and will be purchasing a second one soon.

For the uninformed, "clown" (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=5902) is the new slang word for people doing stupid things on eBay. Check out the explanation of why he cancelled my bid...
In my searching for joysticks, I found that it is really TOUGH to find a standard joystick that isn't right handed. Somebody needs to stockpile these Raider Pros for future Mamers...

Geeesh. Is that a legit reason? Either start higher, put a reserve, or don't auction it.
-
I just went to another seller, as this person has no idea how eBay works. The funny thing is that I didn't even bid 1.99 on the item. He doesn't understand that my higher bid won't go in place until someone else comes in and bids on the item. He is going to keep wondering why everyone only bids 1.99 on it.
-
that is funny... haaa haa haa....
put something on ebay.... let people bid.. no reserve...
but cancel every single bit because he need people to bid $10 right away when his starting bid is $1.99....
haaa haaa haaa..... :) well....
live and learn.... there's new stupidity everyday....
haaa haaa haaa.....

http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html
Transaction Problems -> Selling Offenses -> A seller cancelled all bids and ended an auction early
Closest thing I could find in their *OLD* easier-to-file "help" system. You might find something closer under "reserve abuse--eg not paying for reserve price but cancelling bids/not selling if not meeting reserve".
File as the buyer they may at least warn him. The rest of us not part of the trx cant do much especially when it closes in 3 hours.

Because I'm an @ss, I bid exactly 1.99 on the joystick, toward the end I thought he wasn't going to retract my bid, and I would end up having to deal with this guy. Luckily someone out bid me with 2.24, we'll see what kind of response that buyer gives him.

I reported it under "I won an item and the seller won't sell it to me". Technically, the bid I had placed was higher than the auction closing price. At first I thought I should have made sure I won the auction so I could post negative feedback, but then I realized that he would have posted negative feedback for me.
Anyway, it's just water under the bridge. I picked up two joysticks, so I'm glad I didn't buy his.

I wonder if this would work on black buttons..... I doubt it tho. I have thought of using some kind of high temp engine paint or similar and then baking the palstic parts in a low temp oven. I know that some types of thermo plastics can take alot of heat. Maybe even enough to hold the paint well. Any ideas on this?
