I've been trawling through the Examples section of the site and there are a hell of alot of links. Quite a few are dead mind you. The webmaster should give them a quick going over. Some sort of categorising would be nice too.
I tend to like the more modern style cabinets. White or light coloured ones look so much better in a domestic environment. http://www.hellspark.com/dm/mame/cabinet/mvc-507f.jpg
My question is are there any really cool looking ones you've seen. Alot of them can be nasty fake wood/marble effect and I'm interested in trying a cleaner more professional look.
-
There's a lot of nice looking one's in the examples section.. I looked through all of them when I first built my cabinet. It gave me a really good understanding of what I wanted to do accomplish. I recommend doing the same.

most impressive cab ??
1UP's cab got my vote....
There are a lot of nice looking cab out there....
but most impressive one.... personally.... that's it.....
Yeah !!!!!!........
-
I agree.
It begins and end's with 1UP's cab. :o
Although I like the look of the Roswell cab, too. That moonscape is b@d@$$.
My cab has the "nasty fake marble effect". It is not by any means the best looking cab out there, but it suits me for now, and it's functional. Perhaps when I get into a house I will be able to really do it up nicely because I'll have a garage, but for now it'll do.
-
I second the vote for 1ups... also motorfishes is pretty awesome (does he have a site or just this thread (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=3066) cept his monthly bandwith seems to have run out - hopefully google cache out there =P )
When I was making mine, I used to like (well still do) ArcadeFX's as it resembled some of my project goals...

Yes.. motofish's cab is excellent!
-
Hrm.. motorfish's site is down.
1UP's is certainly impressive. Rotating control panels..

This badboys are just tooooooo cool for my style..I am trying to build EXACT same one now...shhhh..supposed to be a secret :D.

Well, before 1UP what inspired me was the roswell cabinet. Totally themed down to the FE.
1UP's is just impressive marvel of engineering.
-
For the most impressive cab I'd say 1ups. Also, he website is detailed quite well, so that helps.
http://www.movielocity.com/mame/ (http://www.movielocity.com/mame/) I also thought that this website gave a good deal of info on how he built his cabinet.
-
Yeah...1Up's cab is not just an engineering marvel, he was somehow born with the geek AND the artist gene. It is not just amazingly functional, it is a work of art.
It seems that it will be a while before someone manages to one-up him (pun intended). Even the people who are copying much of his design (myself included) can generally only hope to turn out something close to as good. It is really the hands-down winner in the best-cab contest. It ain't even a decision.
-
1up's for functionality and technical genius.
Mine for looks. I would'nt have built mine the way I did if I didn't think it was the best, now would I? :)

1-up's is the best, but this one is very nice too:

Personally, I like "Yet another MAME arcade machine" for the the almost top pick.
Link: http://www.robboweb.com/mamecab/gallery/imagepages/image17.htm (http://www.robboweb.com/mamecab/gallery/imagepages/image17.htm)
And another would definantly be 1ups, because of the Control Panel...
Another really nice one is This one... (http://home.neo.rr.com/martinko/left.jpg)
But when Push comes to shove... I want to find out who made this one, and get a play by play on the construction!

What I like about this site is the chance to see everyone cabinets. To find out how they built them, which bumps in the road the crossed and how the managed it. That sort of thing. The pleasure is in hearing and watching the story. My friends, the best is yet to come, each cabinet is a chapter in the book that is arcadecontrols.com. The story hasn't ended yet and as we all now, everyone loves a sequel.
But seriously. There certainly is more to come. I mean, how many cockpit/driving cabs have we seen? What about the shooters?
I must say, less is more. I like multifunction cabinets. I really like the discrete ones. I think there is a lean to swappable cps, not to mention the recent rotating cabs.
Also lets not forget the console cabs. While not every game on a console can/should be played on a cab', certainly there are some where its perfectly fine.
Some of the most impressive cabinets in the future will be the ones that display the innovations that everyone will want to copy.

That is one impressive cab. I've got to ask does anyone know where any dimensions for that style of cab would be available????

That cabinet is GamePimp's cabinet, the SuperMAME the picture you had is the construction picture, and here's the finished product.

I personally reallly think m3talslug's control panel is awesome! The way he interfaced the L-20s (or whatever) to the druin interface AND the analog on the playstation pad!
http://tobywong.50megs.com/
There's a lot of great cabinets in the Examples page, and 1ups control panel has to be one of the best implemented ideas I've seen in a long time. I have to give a lot of credit to Mr. Salty with his cab though, fully changable control panel and everything!
http://www.mrsalty.net/arcade/index.shtml
And of course, I have to give credit to PhantomPower for his awesome street fighter layout on his MameStations, MameStation II is especially awesome!
http://www.leafstation.com
The cabinet that I got a lot of inspiration from, WebbPickersGill's cabinet, not the best, not the worst, but very solid design.

1up's.
A classic shape and funcional beyond belief.
I love the look and design of it. My interpretation of his cabinet will have even more of a defender shape to it.... Firmly in the parts collection stage now.
*patiently waits for his Star Wars yoke to arrive*
Bless you 1UP!
*sprinkles holy water at him!*

GREAT thread, guys!
when i first started working on this ongoing project, i took a few days and went thru EVERY link on the examples page. there were a lot of nice ones, and a lot of repetitiveness as well.. going thru all of those is a VERY tiring process, and gets boring after a while.. i saved some of the links of my favorites (at home), and i'll post them here later... this thread is a good way to get all of the 'best' stuff in one place.
oh, and the 'SuperMAME' is awesome! i've never seen that! the only thing i would change about it would be to have the marquee going the length of the unit, not smaller and centered as it it..
-
1UP's is the best looking and most functional design I have seen, which is why I am copying it.
I'm not into the oversize control panels but if I were, Scott's Unicade would get my vote. http://home.austin.rr.com/shumate/unicade/

Roswell is the cab that inspired me orignally a few years back, but the BEAM machine (http://www.geocities.com/brian_coney/maincabinetpage.html) is the design I tried somewhat to emulate. I had orignally gone with a granite Jurrasic Park theme and scrapped it and did the real oak finish for a nice furniture quality looking machine and it made the wife happy! ;D Some day I will get all the pictures online to see the transformation from granite to oak.

1ups and gamepimps supermame are my favorites, supermame is a take off of one of hanna-ho's arcade models, joseq from emuviews bought one from hanna-ho (for major $$$) http://www.emuviews.com/cgi-local/show.cgi?SERIAL=1445&LANG=en_US
I like gamepimps cab better ;) and I'm sure he didn't pay what joseq did!
I think when I build my dream cab it will resemble hh's and gp's cab.
