Title: MK2 - no video
Post by: jfh2112 on October 15, 2006, 12:32:09 am
Now that my MK is pretty much complete, I decided to start working on my poor, poor MK2 cab I got at the same time. I pulled the PCBs today and started to clean them up a bit - spiders are nasty.  :-\ I pulled a chip off the main board and noticed that one of the pins was broken off halfway. I pulled another one and noticed that two pins were broken. So I stopped pulling chips. I plugged just the main PCB into my MK cabinet & fired it up. No video. The board LED comes on, and my coin door lights come on, but that's all.

I'm guessing I'm gonna need new chips, or a new PCB. Or, I need to connect the sound board as well for it to do anything. Am I right, or am I way off?

Why were you pulling chips?

Were they broken before you pulled them, or did your pulling break the legs?

It's posible to 'fix' the chips by soldering a capacitor leg or something similar to the remains of the broken leg.  Delicate work, though.

I was pulling the chips so I could clean the board. The guy I bought the games from keeps them in a warehouse that might as well just be a tarp supported by sticks, for all the protection it gives his games. The boards were caked with dust & covered in cobwebs; I'd guess it's been in the warehouse for at least 8 years.

As far as the pins being broken before or after I started yanking them, it's hard to say. There's a lot of rust on some of the pins, and they could have just rusted away, and my removing them finished them off.

I did the same thing to my MK boards and had no problems, luckily. It actually runs better than it did before; got rid of some background corruption and general wonkiness.

I seriously doubt my soldering skills are good enough to fix the pins. Although this would be good practice. :) I'll probably end up getting another board set.

How were you pulling the chips?  Were you using a chip puller?

Never do that.  Take a flathead screwdriver, and GENTLY raise one end, and then the other.

I just yell at them until they pull themselves. Lazy, no good, slacker chips.
