Title: Opinions of SANWA JLF-TP-8YT Joysticks?
Post by: quarterback on October 06, 2006, 02:08:30 pm
All of my current joysticks are Wico 8-ways and I love them.  However, I'm looking at starting a new project and might want to buy a new joystick.

I'm definitely a leaf-button guy who doesn't like the clicky-ness of microswitch buttons, but as far a joysticks go, I think I can tolerate the microswitch click.

That being said, this auction here (http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270002639474) claims "These are ideal for people that don't like the clicky sound of microswitches that usually come with most standard joysticks."   Is that true?  Are these less clicky?

I get the impression that these are good for fighters and maybe that means they are very quick (or have a short throw) is that right?

According ot other websites, they're also 4-way 8-way switchable.  Are they good at both?  Better at one setting than the other?

Anything else I need to know?  Again, I'm a wico 8-way leaf user, so any info about how they compare/contrast to the wico might help me decide.

Thanks
qb

Also, I'm wondering how the Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT compares with the Sanwa JLW-TM-8 (Ultimarc J-Stik).

Both can be seen here:

I use the JLW-TM-8 a lot.
They are a very good stick IMO. Very precise.

I put the JLF and a Super side-by-side on the desk and clicked away.  The JLF is a higher note than a Super and sounds snappier.  In our panels they're a little quieter but sound more microswitchy.

You're right, they are great for fighters and "feel quick".  The return-to-center is kind of like a Happ with a harder spring but without the extra effort to throw it.  I've never checked, but I think the actuator is closer to the pivot point on Sanwa sticks so you get better leverage.  There isn't a very big dead zone.  It's either on, or it's off.

A JLF feels way more precise than the old WICO 8-way micro joys.  (The only leaf sticks I have now are original Pacs)

I've never used a JLW.  Any Sanwa requests have been JLF variations.

all Japanese joystick centre to center average. pivot then hemisphere, this does not to centre to center so quickly how cone. death zone is large 5mm (JLF is not suitable to shmups)

One thing I've noticed from the pictures is that the JLF doesn't use levered microswitches. I wonder whether that makes it smoother than the JLW.

In my experience the Happ Competition joystick (which also doesn't use levered microswitches) feels smoother than the Happ Super joystick. However, the Super is a better joystick overall.

Interesting.  A large dead zone making it not suitable to shmups.   Any other comments on how this would work on classic (non fighter) games like Pacman, Donkeykong, galaga etc?

in JLF mode 4 way does not act correctly. diagonals act still.
this is very good joytsick but only for 3D fighters: Tekken, Virtua Fighter.  Guilty Gear players like him also.

to Galaga, Puckman the best to buy JLW or Seimitsu

Buy Sanwa JLW (J-Stik), Seimitsu or UltraStik for 4-way games.
