This is my first atempt to vectorize something with Illustrator. Just to do some experience.

The second one is the traced version... :laugh2:
Eventually I'm gonna vectorize my home made sideart. But then I want to draw it (by hand) first on paper, scan it and then use Illustrator to trace it. I don't know if there are better/other ways to do this??? Any suggestions on this are very welcome! ;D

If you are going to be doing alot of illustrator work you might want to get a drawing tablet and just draw directly into the program. Could save a ton of time.

Don't be afraid to use fonts instead of tracing by hand, especially when your looking for clean pin sharp characters.
The font above must be something freely available.

Any suggestions on a place to find good fonts that may be relevant to our hobby?

Commercial fonts are going to be difficukt to find but their are certain ways to locate them.
1. Ask here once your font has been identified.
2. P2P is always your friend!

Yeah, but only if I can get my hands on a cheap secondhand.

I haven't thought about that. I have tons of fonts! Searching for one will be the hard part. BTW the 'TM' in my second try is a font, Arial. ;D

I'm very pleased with it myself, but I like to have some feedback.

That works so much better!
The font element really bolsters the name and creates a professional look and feel.
Adding shading and drop shadow just accents the letters much better.
Comparing your first try to this, your new one is 1000% better!

hummm....
I tried the tablet various times, and I must say that IMHO a tablet it's not usefull for tracing. you can get much more accurate tracing using the mouse.
the only use of the tablet I found is when tracing some scarry small parts with the pen.

yes use the font when it's possible.
but please don't forget to convert the text to path when finished. (there's an option menu for that, should be called "text/convert to path")
