Title: Super Joysticks..non-Happ?
Post by: AE35 on October 03, 2006, 11:59:16 am

Hey all!

Do anyone know these Super Joysticks? They're not Happ I am told by the
store.

What are the word on the street? return-to-center, throw etc..

Thanks,

Nicholas

They certainly look just like Happs Supers.  I'm not saying those ripoffs are of the same quality, but I think Supers are probably the best all around 8-way microswitch joystick out there in my experience.

Thanks!

Can you tell me anything about short or fast throw from the picture? :)

I hope they have a little shorter throw that the competitions, but not as much
as the Mag-Sticks.

I think the throw is similar to the Competition, but it feels a tad stiffer.  From what I've read the throw is shorter than the mag stick, but I have never tried a mag stick, so don't quote me on that.  The problem with the Competition (for me) was that it was very difficult to hit the cardinal directions (left, right, up,down) without accidentally hitting diagonal.  Some games are very hard to play properly because of this (Gauntlet and Venture come to mind).

I had the same problem with the mag-sticks. In games like Commando and Donpachi
etc. I remember in Out Zone when you have to walk across some stuff without
falling down. That was really annoying when you tried to walk straight ahead and it
would go diagonally.

From what I've read the throw is shorter than the mag stick

This cant be true. I had a magstik and I have supers now. Nothing has a shorter throw than a magstik.

I've got a couple of these which I bought off another board member a few years ago. I've never actually used them because they were fairly beaten up and one of them was missing a spacer (the seller didn't tell me about this >:() however, I can comment on their appearance and build.

They feel very solid, almost as well made as the Happ/IL Supers on which they're clearly based. Definitely not junk. One thing I like about them is that the visible section of the shaft below the bat handle is solid metal whereas on the Happ supers this section of the shaft is covered by a plastic sleeve. This is obviously only a cosmetic difference but it makes the joysticks look a little classier IMHO.

The joysticks are height adjustable and both heights are slightly higher than the Happ equivalent. So they're easily fitted to a wood panel. The downside is that the extra height makes the joystick's throw a little longer than the Super's, and the Super's throw is already too long IMHO.

I can confirm the microswitches are crap but they're easily replaced.

I believe they're manufactured by SunBetty.
