I am going to make a bartop arcade and plan on using Jakks TV Games 5-in-1, but how could I plug it into a computer monitor because I don't have a spare tv?
-
You would need some sort of NTSC to VGA converter.
Personally I don't recommend going through that much trouble and it would be cheaper just to try and pick up a used 13"-19" TV at like a thrift or pawn shop for fairly cheap.
It's a cool little project idea and simple enough to do, just don't complicate it with trying to use a PC monitor.
My $.02

I second that.

I'm not a big fan of the jakks, as they cram a vertical screen into a horizontal. I can't dig on that.
With that said, if you do go through with it, i would highly reccommend shooting for a jakks unit with some more games. and working pole position in won't be easy - - controls wise, as they use a cheap twist joystick.

Agreed..... but I've done them in cabs for the younger kids because they're simple enough for them to operate and the younger kids could care less about visual authenticity or gameplay, they just want to "play" something.
And the Jakks that have Pole Position on them .... I use an original Ikari Warriors style joystick. ;)
(I never use any of the Jakks controls)

The good thing is that the twist joystick uses a standard 1/4" shaft. I have a panel that uses a real joystick for the main control, but still has the twist joy mounted with a knob (just for Pole Postion).
As far as using it with a monitor, you could get a TV for cheaper, as mentioned, or you could probably find an old PC for cheap.

That's a fantastic idea!
For a bartop, if all you have is a PC monitor you either need to get an adaptor, which will be expensive, get a TV which will be equally or less expensive, or get an ancient laptop or mini computer to run MAME and a front end in which is potentially cheap, but much more work to tweak.
So... ninthed?

Tahnok, by any chance do you have pics of the CP with the real joystick and twist joystick? Since the twist joy uses a 1/4" shaft, I wonder if the mini-steering wheel that www.ezarcadesolutions.com sells would work for it. Your concept definitely has me thinking!

Here ya go... Not one of my best CPs, just a little personal thing made out of a wireless Ms. Pac-Man unit. Ignore the white joy, it's just a fusion painted Super. The single white button is menu. The pink block is the Jakks joystick, hot glued in (no real good ways to mount it).
I seem to recall having a discussion bishmasterb, who was going to use a mini wheel on his. I'm not sure what ever happened with it though. I don't think there's any reason you shouldn't be able to do it.
Edit: Looking at the wheel, my only thought is whether or not the thing is strong enough. I've never had problems with the little knob, but the leverage of a wheel might be a different story.

Edit: I don't know how I double posted.

Tahnok, nice little CP. Thanks for the pics!

Since there are some guys who have opened up their Jakks already:
I bought a Ms.Pac Man with extra game key included for 4,95 at EB games, couldn't leave it for that amount. I thought my PAL TV would handle it even though the game is obviously NTSC. It does work, but the colors are wrong. Did any of you guys notice any jumper or something else on the PCB that could indicate PAL/NTSC switching ?
I made the mistake of thinking it would work fine because I already have a US DC here that works fine, but that is only because I connect it using a SCART (=RGB) connector.
The JAKKS have only a Compsite Video out.

I think, as cheap as these are, that there is no option for PAL output.
