I don't think those gateway destination monitors are very good.. guess it wouldn't be too bad for a mame cab.. they weren't very good at their intended function.. but as mame maybe..
on the plus side I think it takes a standard VGA connector which would make life easier..
the characteristics would be similar to a PC monitor rather than TV however..

Okay lets make things clear.
These monitors arent like actual pc monitors...they are like vga arcade monitors with *TINY* scanlines that are noticable..
How I know?
I seen it.
no way games would look like how it looks on your generic PC monitor(15" or 17").
Not that Its my auction or I give a crap if he couldn't sell it. :P
I am just letting you know in case you are just "GUESSING". :)

perhaps it was an educated guess..
Destination PC's came out some time ago (maybe 8 years?) and they were a flop... they were intended to make your computer an integral part of your entertainment center... IE replace your TV.
If you look at the specifications of several of these monitors.. they all point to PC monitor..
http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/Z00074/Z0007405.shtml
It is VESA and PC97/98 compliant.. as well as power management EPA standards..
now about scanlines?? I don't think it does.. but I could be mistaken..

not to say it isn't a bad deal for 200 :D

They are not too bad in my opinion. I have them in many of the schools i work at. Mostly in libraries. Better than TV's.

Hey, here's another one, and it looks like he will ship.

I own a 36" Gateway Destination monitor. Its no TV. But being a huge monitor, the scanlines (or dot pitch) are obviously larger than your normal desktop monitor. Unless you are planning on standing 2 feet in front of the monitor, the scanlines are not noticable.
The past problem with these monitors was their application, and not function. They were supposed to replace your TV so you could write emails, and watch NTSC tv at the same time. The problem was the video card in these old machines was utter crap, resulting in a bad pixelated/artifacting NTSC picture, and in turn giving the gateway destination brand a bad name. Gateway then discontinued it.
These monitors have been a well hidden secret for a long time. I got my 36" for $500 2 years ago, and can't believe how awsome it is to play Dreamcast games on it. I still hope to someday build that showcase style cabinet for it. My only wish was that it could also display 15khz (which it can't natively).

Most of these have a .81 dot pitch with a low max resolution.

I'm not sure if you are stating this for people who don't know these aren't ment to be used as a desktop monitor, or if you are saying they are crap. But you will be hard pressed to find anything better (dot pitch or resolution wise) at this size. The only thing that can come close is the 33" d9200 which only has an advertised max resolution of 640x480 (the destinations can do 800x600...and I believe some of the 31" versions can do 1024x768). And the price of the 33" d9200 is easily twice as much.
Personally I wouldn't use a 36" monitor to play mame games on. :P But Naomi ports (Dreamcast) running in native 31.5khz look better than anything I've seen in the arcades on those showcase cabs (which are mostly std res 15khz). ;D

Thats what I have been trying to tell people. :P
This kind of monitor is not for your desktop use but VERY reasonable for your cabinet..I wish I had enough space to have a huge cabinet(my parents dont even wanna let me keep a 27" :-\)

wow.. this is tempting.. the one in new mexico doesn't list the maximum resolution, but the one in new hampshire is only 640 x 480. :( too bad... i'm ~3.5 hours from that guy, and would prolly consider taking the trip if it had a higher resolution like SNAAAKE mentioned...
and 159 lbs?!?! holy....................!!!!! :o :o :o

This looks like the their earliest model (1996 only 640x480). But truthfully, I never drive mine past 640x480. Again, think about what you are going to use it for. If for mame, almost all the games run native Std Res (640x200), and a few at Med Res (640x400). If you plan to use on a DC or Xbox, native progressive out is 480P (640x480). For $50 thats a steal (if you can pick it up locally).

I was just trying to pass some info along. They are great for their intended purpose. Many people weren't happy with them because of unreasonable expectations. I have a 37" monitor (not one of the gateways) that I absolutely love, its dot pitch is smaller and it will do 1280x1024, its a little fuzzy for surfing the web but its an awesome game monitor.
