Title: Driving Cabinet Poll
Post by: johnm160 on September 26, 2006, 09:57:05 pm
Hi Gang,

I am looking for some feedback for an upcoming project.

Which style of driving cabinet do you prefer and why?

I built this recently:

I presume we aren't taking anything into account except for personal preference? If I could do either... of course I would go with a cockpit. I'd be surprised if anyone would prefer to not go with the cockpit.

There are 2 reasons I went with an upright cabinet for my driver.

1. Space - I didn't have room for a cockpit.
2. Games - I am only playing arcade games on mine. Arcade drivers are meant to be played quickly. Few minutes and the game is usually over. If I were building an xbox driving cabinet, I'd want it to be a bit more comfortable.

I suppose cost could be a factor, but in my case it wasn't. Since I didn't have the space and planned on playing arcade drivers - cost didn't matter.

Check out The Coders build in Project Announcement. He is going all out on a cockpit style cabinet.

That looks good. Mame or a console?

Yes purely looking for personal pref. I was actually referring to an open sit down cab vs cockpit. But Upright does have space advantages.

I will go look a coders now,  I have been looking at several so I don't remember which is his.

I prefer open style.  In particular, I'm working on a Buck Roger and the Planet of Zoom sitdown cabinet.

It is very small for a cockpit game and it splits into 2 parts for convenience of transport. (I recently moved and it was the easiest of all my cabinets to move)  It doesn't take much more space then an upright.

When I calculate the space for an upright, I have to account for someone to stand in front of it, and for others to walk behind them.

There's a picture on KLOV.

For home use, I would definitely prefer an open racer. In the arcade cockpits were cool because you could be isolated from all the idiots in the arcade. At home, most likely you will be the only idiot in your arcade...unless your friends are over, but then they are idiots too ,but you like them ;D. Open communication is a good thing in a home arcade.

Last reason: a cockpit is just too big for home use.

Yeah, same reasons as above - I would feel like a goober sitting in a closed in cockpit in my room. Unless I went all out on it and made something like my own MechWarrior rig with overwhelming panel n surround sound mouted in there. Then I would lock that thing and not come out.

Thanks for the input guys, I prefer a cockpit myself but also figured that it was kind of bulky for home. As mentioned I thought that it might feel strange hanging out in there :P Lastly I was thinking it would be easier to watch someone race with an open style.
