Title: Sticky vinyl on MDF?
Post by: sealslayer on September 25, 2006, 11:37:44 am
A few pieces of my cab are going to be quite hard to laminate so I was thinking of using sticky vinyl like the stuff listed below...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Neon-Pink-Sticky-Back-Vinyl-Like-Fablon-3-METRES_W0QQitemZ290021658484QQihZ019QQcategoryZ20594QQcmdZViewItem

Has anyone used this on MDF? if so any issues with the glue seeping into the wood overtime or should the MDF have some sort of treatment before its applied?

Cheers

If it's anything like the Parts Express vinyl - it should work fine. I did my control panel out of MDF, and got lazy and didn't primer it first. I just wiped off the surface to make sure there was no dirt\dust, and then applied. Two months later, and it is holding up quite well - nothing peeling up.

You might also consider painting the areas if they are fairly small.  I've painted the black areas on several cabinets with semi gloss Rustoleum, and it has always turned out great looking and durable.

Be meticulous about that. Little bits of dust end up being bumps in the vinyl that will bug you forever. And take care to search and destroy all bubbles. I was a little sloppy and I regret it.

I too used Parts Express and I applied it over primed MDF. It looks great.

Good is an understatement. Your mame cab paint job looked like laminate.
