Title: Tron question
Post by: sol on September 19, 2006, 01:59:58 am
Hello everyone,

I am new and have read a lot of the threads, very informative, a great resource.

Just a question about TRON triggerstick. From what I read you need a diamond restrictor plate so that you can play the light cycles ie. restrict diagonals but not totally, however everything else seems to work in the normal 8 way mode. Is it feasible to have two triggersticks one 8 way and one 4 way (for light cycles) to overcome this. That way you have two sticks that can be used on other games such as Battlezone.

Cheers

Sol :)

The second stick doesn't need to be a trigger stick, as long as you have a button available on the CP somewhere.
The light cycle stage doesn't use the spinner, so all you need is an 8-way trigger stick, and a 4-way regular stick.

It's kind of hard to move, aim with a spinner and shoot at the same time without a trigger.

The original stick used a RUBBER restrictor which made the stick work well as a 4-way, but if you push towards diagonal, it would still work.

Very.  I'm trying to figure out how to create a "snap-on" trigger for this.  Saw a remote for a PC that is meant to turn on or off a device in the machine, if it could be wired to trigger a relay it might work... otherwise you'd need a jack in the panel to plug it in when snapped on.

You'd have a pretty difficult time getting past the third (maybe even 2nd) level spiders and MCP cone without a trigger stick IMO.

If lightcycle is the only stage you need 4 way for....why would you need it to be a trigger stick? He already said "8-way trigger stick and 4-way regular", or am I missing something?

Oh whoops, I missed the '2nd' stick reference.  Yeah that would probably work.  Although, I find I have problems with the tank level (which is definitely a 4-way level) using the 8 way and spinner.

An Ultimarc 360 or a GPWiz-49 with an appropriate digital restriction map and an added trigger would be a good solution...

This might be a dumb question, but how would add a trigger to a 360?

Hi all,

Just to clarify, the original Tron used an 8-way stick which was restricted to 4 way (using a rubber restricitor)? I don't remember playing this game 'in my day' but don't some parts of the game require and 8-way? If so how well did the 'restricted' stick work as an 8-way?

Just wondering.

Cheers,
Breaker.

It was only partially restricted -- you could still hit the diagonals if you tried really hard (for spiders and MCP cone), but they weren't accessible enough to screw up the light cycle and tank levels.  So it was a partial 8way 4way.  ;D  Do a search on the boards and you'll find tons of discussion on this stick.  Anyway this is why an 'electronic' mapping like the one provided with GGG's 49-way interface, or Ultimarc's software mapping for the new ultimate 360 are such good candidates.

They actually work quite well as an 8-way.
They just don't have as much of a diagonal as an 8-way restricted stick does.

It's not difficult at all to hit the diagonals, when you want to.
Anything between the two directions will register as a diagonal.
What the restrictor did was allow you to hit the true directions quickly, not prevent you from hitting diagonals.

During the lightcycle stage, you have to push the stick very quickly to the direction you want to travel.
If you move it too slowly, you will still get the zig-zags, and die.

Jeez man, it's been said already. Plus, you know the restrictor is rubber, so doesn't that answer your own question? You do know rubber flexes, yes?

It's not a dumb question; it's one I'm trying to figure out a solution to.  Right now I'm thinking of a clamp-on grip, or perhaps one that slides over with foam rubber inside (like a bicycle handlebart grip) to keep it from moving.  As far as the trigger, the easiest but less clean solution is to have a tiny headphone-style jack on the control panel to plug it into; the better answer is a remote transmitter like one for a car, but I don't know if that would cycle fast enough for a game like Tron.

Doh! I thought you already knew of a way. Don't tease!

I thought all we really needed was a hallow shaft for either the 49-way or ultimate 360 sticks and a tank/trigger grip (like the repros Fozzy is working on) to somehow fit over it?

Yeah, but in the meantime I'm trying to come up with a simple "add-on" for those like me who don't want Tron-style trigger sticks all the time (can you imagine playing Pengo or Pac-Man with one?).

:)What about a Happ Top Fire stick for the four way?

Does the shaft of a Wico handle fit in a P360? Does the shaft of a Super for that matter?

If yes to either question, then why not go for this:

(yeah Im all out, but if I can make one, you can make one! )

To sum up once and for all how the eight way is hit with the four way restrictor, here's the explanation.

The tron joystick, and I have one at home so double checked this morning, has a huge red rubber grommet/washer thing on the bottom that enables both leaf switches to be pushed together when moving towards the, albeit limited, diagonals.
