Title: Movies in mamewah not working
Post by: NightGod on September 17, 2006, 03:22:02 am
Getting to the final stages of setting up my cab, and looking for a bit of help on a couple things:

1) Intro movies

I had these working at once point, then I trashed my ini files and had to start over, now I can't get them working for anything. I've copied what I think are the relevant parts of the ini files, can anyone see my problem?

### Movie Options ###
intro_movie_file
exit_movie_file
keep_movie_preview_aspect   game_aspect
delay_before_movie_preview  2
music_movie_mix             mute_movies
movie_volume                0

~and~

### Artwork Locations ###
artwork_1_image_path                      F:\MAME\snap
artwork_2_image_path                      F:\MAME\marquees
artwork_3_image_path                      F:\MAME\cabinets
artwork_4_image_path                      F:\MAME\titles
artwork_5_image_path                      F:\MAME\cpanel
artwork_6_image_path                      F:\MAME\flyers
artwork_7_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_8_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_9_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_10_image_path                    F:\MAME
movie_preview_path                          F:\MAME\movies
movie_artwork_no                             1

2) Vertical games
Any good way to get the screen to orient itself properly for vertical games? I see an option in Mamewah configuration tool that mentions orientation, but kinda clueless on exactly how to use it.

OK, so I figured out the vertical rotation issues (thanks Intel integrated graphics (http://www.mame.net/mamefaq.html#w05) that I was using for setup =x), but still could use some help on the movie problem if anyone has any ideas.

They're little 20 second or so clips of the game being played that show up on the main Mamewah menu. There's a sticky at the top of this section of the forum to get them. You'll need a bittorrent client, I personally recommend uTorrent

Here is the website, http://www.emumovies.com/ . THere are some samples to download and have a look at. You WILL need the DivX codec which can be obtained from www.divx.com.

ffdshow contains a divx codec along with many others. And you don't get the crappy junk that comes with the official DivX codec/player.

Well, if you have a Hotmail account you must have internet access. What else is required?

Wherever he is trying to get the files from probably requires what they consider a "real" email account, whatever that means. I use [romsite name redacted] and they require this. I used my old, but still working university email address. If you have a school, work, or maybe even an email address from your isp it would probably work.

All you should need is Windows Media Player and the DivX codec. They all work perfectly. Are you saying some play and some don't?

Have you had a look through
http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah_Ini#Movie_Options
It may be that you are pointing mamewah at the snaps folder for artwork #1 and then telling it to use the movie path for that the same number. Are you using all those artwork paths in your layout?  If you want the movies to play in artwork 1 on your layout then put the movie path against #1 as well.

And also the mame intro vids are encoded using xvid not divx like all the other emu movies

So you're saying that instead of:

artwork_1_image_path                      F:\MAME\snap
artwork_2_image_path                      F:\MAME\marquees
artwork_3_image_path                      F:\MAME\cabinets
artwork_4_image_path                      F:\MAME\titles
artwork_5_image_path                      F:\MAME\cpanel
artwork_6_image_path                      F:\MAME\flyers
artwork_7_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_8_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_9_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_10_image_path                    F:\MAME
movie_preview_path                          F:\MAME\movies
movie_artwork_no                             1

It should be:

artwork_1_image_path                      F:\MAME\snap
artwork_2_image_path                      F:\MAME\marquees
artwork_3_image_path                      F:\MAME\cabinets
artwork_4_image_path                      F:\MAME\titles
artwork_5_image_path                      F:\MAME\cpanel
artwork_6_image_path                      F:\MAME\flyers
artwork_7_image_path                      F:\MAME\movies
artwork_8_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_9_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_10_image_path                    F:\MAME
movie_preview_path                          F:\MAME\movies
movie_artwork_no                             1

Wow...I feel like a dumbass LOL-I guess I figured with it listed in the movie_preview_path, I didn't need it in an artwork path.

artwork_1_image_path                      F:\MAME\snap
artwork_2_image_path                      F:\MAME\marquees
artwork_3_image_path                      F:\MAME\cabinets
artwork_4_image_path                      F:\MAME\titles
artwork_5_image_path                      F:\MAME\cpanel
artwork_6_image_path                      F:\MAME\flyers
artwork_7_image_path                      F:\MAME\movies
artwork_8_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_9_image_path                      F:\MAME
artwork_10_image_path                    F:\MAME
movie_preview_path                          F:\MAME\movies
movie_artwork_no                             7

And make sure to have the layout set up for the movies as well

Funny, I left it as 1 and it worked fine, but if I change it to 7, it stops working.

I'm pretty sure that artwork number is what you want it to replace in the layout. In mine it shows the snap for 2 seconds (per my mamewah.ini file) and then starts up the movie.

Ahh cool - glad you got it working.  I was replying using my poor memory of the mamewah setup I had at home.  :dunno

So even if the files play in windows media player, you need a codec to get them to play in mamewah?

Title: Re: Movies in mamewah not working
Post by: NightGod on September 24, 2006, 01:19:48 am
Yes, you HAVE to have the Divx codec installed. I was wondering why my ini file worked on one computer and not the next until I remembered that (because Windows Media Player can't play them without the codec).

The free download at www.divx.com is more than sufficient for this purpose and likely all you want to install if you are building a dedicated cab and trying to keep it as clean as possible.

Right now on my PC the videos play fine in Windows Media.

But you're saying I still need the DVix to get them to play in mamewah (or MaLa)?

You were right I still needed the Divx even tho the vids already worked in windows media.  It works for me in mala now but the FE is slow.  And my computer is on the powerful side.

Yeah, I noticed that when I was playing around with Mala. I switched to Mamewah because I needed BetaBrite support and the movies worked great. Dunno what the malfunction is there, but it was bad enough that I just removed the previews from my Mala when I was still using it.

What about if my preview movies only sometimes play in either Window Media Player or other players?  For example, if I lauch a movie in any of several media players, it sometimes plays okay with both picture and sound...and sometimes I can only hear sound. ???

Therefore when I try it in Mamewah, I see the snap for about 2 seconds...then get a blank screen in that area.

I have the DivX and several other codecs installed.  I've tried uninstalling the other codecs and leaving only one at a time, but still have the same issue.

The strange thing is I can't seem to figure out why they play okay only some of the time... ???

Any ideas?

Use xvid !!

That still won't get me BetaBrite support, so it would be a pointless exercise at this stage.

xvid is one of the codecs I've tried, but am still having the same issue.  I would understand if the movies never played correctly, but since they do play correctly some of the time...I'm stumped.

Any other ideas?

I have a possibly related issue where mamewah crashes in the screensaver while playing movies. Sometimes almost immediately, sometimes after many hours.

Okay, whether I use xvid, divx, klite or any other codec...I get the same results.  :dunno

I also ran Gspot and it says I have all the neccessary codecs for audio and video.

This is one of the more frustrating things I've seen related to my cab.  Again, if the vids never played correctly, I'd know my configuration was wrong.  But since they do play sometimes (about 1 out of 10 times), I'm stumped.

It has to be something so minor, but I just can't pin point it.

Any other help is most appreciated!
