Title: 2nd Player Joystick Question
Post by: KF2VS on September 13, 2006, 06:18:12 pm
Hi all,
I have a Mame cabinet I just finished. It is a 2 player machine with two joysticks. If I play Pacman in 2 player mode the only joystick that works is the left (player 1 stick) for both players. Is this because the original game only had 1 joystick?  I've checked the player input settings and the second player joystick controls are set up as the mame default. I've tried Donkey Kong as well with the same results. I havent tried other games because I don't remember any games that actually used 2 joysticks. Any help or guidance is appreciated
Thanks

Yes, it's because the original only used one joystick.

What you can do for those games is go into the in game input settings in MAME and map player one's movement keys to BOTH joysticks (for example, map player 1 left to 'LEFT ARROW OR A' assuming 'left arrow' is mapped to left on your p1 joy and 'a' is mapped to left on your p2 joy).  The only problem is the 2nd player will be able to run your pacman into a ghost with his joystick while you're playing since both joysticks will always be active.  :laugh2:

That second player that's listed is only for the second player when in cocktail mode (for the two games you listed).  To set cocktail mode tab, dipswitch, and set to "cocktail" instead of "upright".  Of course, then player two will be upside down, but hey... ;D

So if the game originally used 2 joysticks then the 2nd joystick will automatically be active?
If I map the 2nd joystick the same as the first for a particular game it will remain that way for that game alone correct?

Correct, as long as you are in "Input - This Game" and not "Input - General"   If you do it in Input - General, games like Twin Cobra will be real interesting b/c both joysticks will control both players.

What would be nice - although it will never happen - would be a MAME option (custom compile) to disable screen flipping in cocktail mode.  Some games have this broken and then you can use both sticks without any conflicts.
