Title: Fighting Games - Square or Round?

I noticed a lot of people have posted that they need to "feel the corners" in fighting games.

I play A LOT of SF with my joysticks which have a "round" feel to it and I like them MUCH better than my joysticks which have a "square" feel for the following reasons:

1)  Easier to do 360/720 motions
2)  Easier to do half circle motions
3)  Easier to do quarter circle motions

With joysticks with square feels sometimes when I'm doing supers I tend to miss the corners or get stuck in a corner while doing the motions fast.

What advantage do you really get when using a joystick with a square feel?

I don't recommend a Squared joystick, It is  hard to move in circles and qaurter circles consitently, The controllers that are rounded are best for fighting games I would recommend the happs competition joystick....

I can understand the need for feeling corners in other types of games, but fighters? Charge moves and the like would work well, but any sort of fireball rolling action would be extremely hampered by the fact that you cannot, um, roll the joystick.  ;)

It really would be interesting to see why people prefer these joysticks on a fighter.

The competetions are squared, the supers are round. Did you mean to recomend the supers?

The p360 is also round but cost a lot more. Basically its a super with optical switches. They are still on sale at Happs for another week or so though.

I think the competitions have round restrictor holes, but square button actuators.  I would be interested to hear from someone who uses competitions for fighter games.  Do the comps make circular movements harder?

You want the square joysticks for that reason - to hit the diagonals.  Having both Supers and Competitions, I hate not finding the diagonals.  Doesn't make a difference for Robotron or Pacman (etc.) but for fighters, shooters, etc. You want the diagonals.  So, square is better than round.  And it's really easy to roll the joystick with the competitions, not sure what everyone else is talking about.

I have never tried the competitions, but just from the descriptions, I would think it makes a huge difference in Robotron. The ability to roll the fire joystick is crucial. The supers work great for this. If there were a square actuator, I can't believe it would be as smooth. Of course since I haven't tried it, I don't know.

I own the comps anf they have round restrictor holes, yes the actuater is square, but you can't feel that, you can only feel the round hole, it is very smooth and tight....

Yes, on the description. No on the circular movements harder. I play way too much SF also and really like the competitions the best out of the microswitch / leaf based ones. Very light, you feel a little nitch in the corners but it's far from distracting.

But I guess I can see how having well-defined corners would help with older SNK fighters and tiger-knee type motions (down to up-forward), though I think our perceptions of how square a square joystick is are slightly off base.

It's all a matter of prefference.

I play mostly fighting games and i like the Competition sticks. yes you feel the corners, that way you can tell exactly where you are, but they don't restrict you at all from doing quarter, half and full cricles. I believe that most arcade fighting cabinets use the competition sticks. or at least they feel the same to me.

The square joysticks have the advantage that yes, it is easier to feel the corners, and if the springs light, you can still move around swiftly, you just don't press as hard on the joystick.  I personally enjoy the roundness of the supers, because when I play, I tend to push pretty hard on the joystick, and therefore if I was using competitions, I'd feel the corners a lot more.  They also can help if you're going to do some shortcuts, such as the uppercut shortcut.  If you don't know what that is, try this with your joystick:
*all done as quick as a normal uppercut*  press forward, RETURN TO CENTER, press c.forward *ducking forward* and punch.  It makes a < shape sorta, but you can pull off some quick uppercuts, and it's one useful thing about sticky corners.
    -I prefer rounded, that's why my cab is solely supers, and I'm going to buy a set of perfect 360s very soon here.

I use competitions myself...

I have no problem doing fireball or dragon punch...
and I can go lower left to block knowing that I did get the corner....

however, I'm not a zangief player... and I can see if you're doing 360 or 720 moves... you might be better off with Super than Competition....

for Ryu / Ken users... you should be fine...

when I use Super (yes, I have a super stick and had used it before...), when I try to block (lower left), sometimes, I'm not accurate and tend to just go down... and got slammed...

I guess you can get use to it or you can say I'm just not good.... (which I admit, I'm not very good...) but able to feel the corner does help on fighting game for me....

btw, the corner is not like a sharp corner that you'll get stuck on easily.... its like a rounded squareish corner... which you can still go smooth..... at least that is my feel to it...

so... my personal opinion is... if I'm playing fighter... I prefer competition....

If anybody goes to the arcade, grabs a fighter joystick, and turns it in a circle, they are probably gonna feel corners. Those are the competition joysticks. That's what the Capcom fighters and Midway fighters use. That's what I plan on using.
