hi, kinda a newb here.. please don't hurt me, =) anyway i just built a new cab and i went to play any of the mk's on my pentium 3 600mhz 128mbram geforce 3 64mb cpu and all i can get is 13 frames... even on the first mortal kombat. is this right? thanks for your help

Ehh, 13 frames doesn't sound completely right, although all of the MKs are very tasking on the hardware. To completely enjoy them, you will need at least 1Ghz+
If your stuck with what you have, try disabling all startup processes if using windows, that should free up some memory, but I don't think it will be the perfomance boost that your looking for.

Well MAME is processor dependant, not video card dependant, so the important number on your system is the 600 processor, not the ge force 3. In your case you got a very fast video card and a very slow processor, which is the reverse of what MAME needs. Your 600 will be fine for 80's games and some vertical scrolling shooters, but for processor intensive games like MK, you will probably have to disable sound to get 60 fps. You may be able to lower the sound quality to get a playable framerate, but depending on your mobo, you will probably just want to upgrade. 1.3 gigahertz processors are less than $40 nowadays.

FWIW,
I was able to run Mortal Kombat 1 with frameskip on a celeron 366@550 in DOS. With sound. I was getting around 30fps (i.e. skip every other frame or what have you) and was perfectly playable. MK2 or any of the other midway games though would be around 13 frames for me =P

Say what? Which MAME version were you using?

advancemame primarily... although I may be misquoting the actual fps (I recently ganked the 550 out of the cabinet in favor of something else) but I'm pretty sure it was running half the frames and am sure it was playable. *Shrug*

The mk games are either not playable or barely playable on a pentium 600 mhz machine. Trust me on this as they were always the games I used for benchmark. Ironically enough a 600 mhz amd would give far more acceptable results but I digress. You need a new processor if you wish to play those games. Also you need a butt-load more ram. Umk3 would probably choke on 128 megs.
