Supply - and more importantly - demand, baby.  If he can actually get the prices he's asking, he is most certainly NOT smokin' crack.  ;)

Pushbuttons for $5?!  Is he insane!  With prices that low, he'll surely go out of business!   :D

Thats not the case..

Its reverse psychology  :o

SEE,people would be visiting his site and think "OH MAN THESE PARTS ARE REALLY EXPENSIVE".

So they will just buy his cabinet for $4000 thinking "all the parts would cost me around $4000+labor anyways so I should just order a cabinet"

wow...i don't see how anyone would spend $4,000 on something without researching at least a little bit first. this guy can't be getting business, can he?

hmmm... :P

I believe he is (getting business)... he's not "new" either.

He does provide a valuable service to those with too  much money and too little ability/time though =P

He frequently posts at the arcade@home cabinet forum (http://www.arcadeathome.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=7)... under the monicker g-rock26 (http://www.arcadeathome.com/forums/member.php?action=viewpro&member=g-rock26)

If you're a member over there he'll give you a discount (not sure how much though or that you'll even care)

*shrug* His cabinets don't really appeal to me asthetically (or financially) but they seem well put together with decent fit and finish...  I do kinda like the cocktails - but again muchas dinero... and i'd rather do it myself.

So, yeah.. he's for real... and people will apparently pay that much for 'em...  *shrug* you could always register at popup land I mean arcade@home and ask him questions, i'm sure he won't be shy about explaining why/how he charges what he does...

Yeah, it's ole' G-Rock. I know him from A@H and yes, he is VERY expensive. In his defense, cuz he's a very pleasant guy to talk to (although his pic is scary as hell), he does a service and occassionaly gets paid for it. Like I told him before, he does nice cabinet builds and that is a talent a lot of people don't have. And tons of people have no clue as to what all is involved in building their own cab. So there are people out there that would love to be part of our great movement and have their own cab... and apparently they have bucks to spend too. He's cashing in on a limited market, but I think I would too if I had the skills to pull it off (my cab is just waaaaay too ugly!). So in closing, he's a good guy, he makes good cabs, he's hella expensive and overpriced, he's scary to look at, and he probably does smoke just a hint of crack. Oh, and the final thing is that if he is getting $3000 for a cab, we should all be jealous! haha

With those cab prices, you can buy a brand new cab from Hanaho.

It is actually pretty simple. What you have is a guy, who probably has another job, who is also willing to do his hobby for money. Probably for as much as he makes at his real job.

I can put together 2 player Mame cabinets all day long for several hundred each in costs ($400-$500ish), but by the time you count the labor, I would have to sell them for at LEAST $1000 just to break even. Forget it. Easier to sit on my butt at work and make the same money doing nothing. All the hard work involved would make me want to make AT LEAST twice the hourly wage I make at work. Bumping the price on that reffited 19" cabinet up to $1500.

Now imagine I was making new cabinets. New ones cost a heck of a lot more than used ones. The wood costs are high. The labor cost is really high (figure $28-$30 per hour, that is what union carpenters make). They also take a long time to make, unless you have a very nice woodshop, with a lot of room.

The funny thing is that it doesn't have to be that expensive. I have no idea why the high dollar cabinet builders are building cabinets at all. Not when they can buy them new (monitors included) from Dynamo, and spend like an hour wiring the controls, and then be ready to ship them. If Dynamo had half a brain they would offer VGA cabinets prewired with I-Pacs, and put all those $5000 cabinet builders out of business.

Hanaho already jumped on that boat. They offer their own. Personally, I think those Hanaho cabs are the prettiest. I've never been a big fan of the Dynamo metal wedge. I don't know what it is about it... Just don't like it...

He's also a member here. He recently posted a yellow galaxian style cab that he built under the project announcements and goes by the name of g-rock26. Some of his cabs are nice but too rich for my blood.

i have a few things to say about that:

-why does a cocktail cab need a 2.2 ghz pc?
-does anyone else think that grand daddy cab bears a strong resemblence to the UAII?

Why not? There are games that can't be played full speed  on a 2.2 so why not go faster? Its also cheaper in the long run to build and support current computers than to try shortcutting on putting a older slower PC in it.
