Title: monitor problem
Post by: frankbp on September 07, 2006, 08:26:51 am
When I plug in my "The Main Event" :badmood: video game the sound and lights come right on but no picture. When it is turned off a great picture shows on the screen for a split second before everything is powered off. Happens everytime. Any help where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I am no pro at all but usually the first line of defense (the best defense is a good offense) would be to do a cap kit.  :cheers:

you need to prove where your fault lie's,is it monitor?,is it game board? or is it power supply?
when i have faults like this i do the following;
1-check to see if the game plays  blind(sound)
2-if plays blind o.k then turn up the screens volts adjustment on the flyback transformer,if you get a blank raster then its a problem with the video input signal from the gameboard(possibly broken wire/bad solder joint/bad connector,bad game board or blanking problem on the monitor)
if you get no screen at all then check for bad solder joints around the monitor chassis/cap kit/other monitor problems like the h.o.t or flyback
3-if game sounds don't happen then check the psu voltages are correct +5/+12/-5
4-if the voltages are fine then find a different game board to test
5-if a different game board works fine then check i/c sockets/plugs/connectors on the old gameboard

I agree with steps 1 and 2. If you get a bright screen and raster in step 2, proceed to step 3, if not don't bother with board voltages and video signals, that's not what your problem is.

Without knowing what model monitor you have, I can only guess at the exact cause. I may not be able to tell you exactly what the problem is, but I can tell you what it probably *isn't*. It won't be your HOT or flyback, and it likely is not a game board problem. I know that because you state you briefly see a picture when you turn the machine off. This leads me to believe that your monitor is probably going into shutdown from a over-voltage situation. If you hear the high voltage come on very quickly when you power the machine on and then the same thing when you turn it off, that is what your problem likely is. You will have to check your B+ voltage and compare it to the manual and then go from there. The monitor is probably giving you a picture in the brief period that the B+ is in the acceptable range as the monitor powers off. A cap kit will likely be needed.
