Title: Is $380 a good price for a working Asteroids Cabaret Cabinet?
Post by: The 80s Man on September 06, 2006, 10:11:59 pm
I'm thinking of buying a Asteroids Cabaret Cabinet like the one shown here.

Do you guys think $380 is a good price? I haven't seen the machine in person yet. But my cousin's friend said that it is complete original and does work.

If working and in good shape the price is decent.  Not a steal but it's a good vector game.

I would pay that much for it with a big grin on my face.

I would consider maybe paying that, provided the machine showed NO signs of defects (turn on the game and leave it on for a while, and play a few games... look for distortec or shakey graphics), also it shouldn't have serious damage like water damage to the cabinet wood.

Thanks for the advice. If that thing has even the slightest game glitch there's no way I would buy it. It would be next to impossible for me to find and fix a ROM or circut problem.

My cousins friend who is selling the machine wrote me back and said
"It takes a little while to warm up but has never experienced any glitches during operation."

Is this a normal thing for old vector games to take time to warm up?

I'll go check it out tomorrow

My Asteroids Deluxe is like that, takes about 5-10 seconds to warm up before picture shows. (game play is immediate though)
I'd suggest just looking for any glitches, funky graphics, missing ship or fire sounds etc.

That's not a vector thing.  It's a monitor thing.  Old rasters do it too.  It means that it is showing age but doesn't mean that failure is near.

My thoughts exactly. Plus it's a vector, which you also don't see every day.

Provided it works for a good 10-15 minutes after startup with no problems, get it.  Pretty good price for a vector mini!

:banghead: Dam it! The guy who was selling it now says that his son wants to keep it so now he's going to give the arcade to his son. :hissy:

How old is the son? If he's just a young un, then he can't appreciate the value of the machine. A cash offer might sway the owner.
