Title: Monitor issues in dos
Post by: SirPoonga on April 05, 2002, 01:01:50 am
I know this has been asked before, but couldn;t find the answer.  Using dos mame.  Let;s use a great example of Battle Toads.
When you run it it doesn't stretch the game vertically like it should be.
The game resolution is 512x224 BUT the original hardware stretched it to a 4:3 aspect ratio.
I want to do that in dos mame.

Do you have stretching enabled?  Did you try manually setting the aspect ratio?  Are you using tweaked modes?  What are you using for a monitor:  arcade, TV, PC?

Generally, more useful info up front = more useful answers!

Trouble with stretching is that hwstretching is windows only (linux?) so it will be very slow to use in pure dos.

Try using SchitechDisplayDoctor to have your video card directly use more native resolutions if the problem is the video card itself.

No stretching is the best solution in Dos.  In windows and a decent video card it doesn't really matter anymore.

stretched=yes
How do you manually set aspect ratios?
19" Eygo vga monitor.

Sorry, I forgot that was an AdvanceMAME-only feature, but if you need to run a DOS version anyway, why not use the best one?  :)

display_resize mixed with a 1:1.71 ratio would be a 4x3 aspect ratio for a 512x224 display (assuming I just did my quickie math right).

Just curious.  My cocktail cab will be 98.  Just the only computer I had around to test was my dual celeron and the only hd I had around was a 200 meg one.

I put free dos on it.  Now, Get this.
I run pacman, the video is screwed up, unless I rotate it vertically.
Capbowl though I run horizontally no problem but vertically sucks.

This sounds like:

1.)  Your video card doesn't support the correct resolution under DOS (vesa).

2.)  Your monitor doesn't support the game res/freq.

Definitely consider using AdvanceMAME for this type of configuration as you will most likely have better results.  This is exactly part of the reason that AdvanceMAME is being developed/improved.
