Title: Perfect 360 Diagonals
Post by: hypernova on September 04, 2006, 12:44:37 am
I don't think my Perfect 360 is, well, perfect.  It seems the amount of space the diagonals occupy is only a fraction of what the 4 cardinal directions occupy.  Seems like UDLR take up 75% of the available input space, while diagonals take around 25%.

Or, simply put, it seems like diagonals are a bit hard to achieve, and have to be a tad too precise to get them to register.  A game like SmashTV makes this very evident.  I can hit them, it just seems to be a little harder than it should be.

Any way to modify this?

Yup, I'm aware I wrote "seems" 4 times.

Open it up and make sure the diodes are aligned. From what I have read, many times they are sent out with at least one pair of diodes slightly off.

In one of my 360's there was a diode that was tilted to the side and not aligned correctly. The other was perfect though.

Hey Kowal! I didn't know you were still online. The actuators you have are awesome and I have a friend who would love to try them. Any idea where we could get some? Do you sell them?

i had them made at a local machine shop.
they charged me $20 each.

see this thread (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=53037) for the specs to give to your machine shop.
note that i chose the 0.541" outside diameter over the 13.5mm ones.

i can't stress enough how great this mod has been. my all-time high score and my average scores in robotron have doubled since i modded my P360s. (note that i also installed shorter shafts and lighter springs. these also make a big difference. see the link in my signature for details).

So you spent $120 for 6 total pieces?

We have a lathe at work...I'll have to find out if it's for metals, and can be that precise, then figure out where to find SS rods if it is, so hopefully I can save some major moolah.

yes.

$20 each is a custom, one-off price. if you made a modest quantity, the price should be much lower.

of course, you'd only need one actuator per joystick, if you trust the results of my experiments. my recommendation would be to just go with the 0.541" ones; i think most people would be pleased with them.

I bought some extra plastic 360 actuators and tired to widdle them down to no avail.

I would like to be able to have some of the smaller actuators for a bit better diagonals if anyone ends up getting some made.

Sonofa...they got rid of the lathe.  (I don't think it was that precise anyway.)

I'll check out the local machine shops.

IF I find a good price, I'll think about getting some more IF people COMMIT to buying.  i.e.  I don't want people saying they want 2, then I get them, and a bunch back out.  I'd probably end up doing a prepay type thing, especially if it's gonna be in the $20 ballpark per to avoid being "stuck" with extras.  Plus, I'm taking your advice, Nut, and going with the middle.  A 50-50 ratio is optimal, and by your accounts, that's apparently the one to do it.

I could use 4 of them, but $20 is a bit much

I'd be willing to go in for some.  I agree that 20 bones is way too much, I'd have to hear the prices first.

Is there anyone on the boards that might be interested in making these?

I'm sure if you can put them out for an OK price, people would buy them.

Probably wouldn't be a great profit, but you would get that warm, pillowy feeling that you have helped a fellow gamer.
