Title: Video Card Questions (non-mame)
Post by: 97thruhiker on September 02, 2006, 10:45:41 am
I'm currently running a MSI motherboard that has onboard video.  The onboard video is the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series.  I moved this computer out of my cabinet to replace my 3+ year old Dell that I have been using as my overall general PC.  I did this because the computer is much faster and it made no sense keeping it in the cabinet to run mame.  The onboard video is fine for running just about anything except the newer PC games.

I want to place a video card in this PC.  Will a motherboard employing ATI onboard video chipset take a Nividia video card?  Additionally, I'm not opposed to getting an ATI graphics card I'm just more familiar with Nvidia.  Is there a link or does anyone know which ATI series is equivilent to the 7000 series Nvidia cards?  Maybe a side by side comparison between the GeForce / Radeon cards.  Thanks.

No reason that motherboard won't run any card you put in it, beyond the occasional driver fun you can run into trying to switch between ATI and Nvidia.

The latest ATI cards are the 1900s, I do believe-not positive, I'm an Nvidia guy, as well.

The ATI 1900 vs. the Nvidia 7900GT or GTX.
For a little less, the ATI 1800 vs. Nvidia 7900.  There are a lot of flavors of both.

Be careful if you're going for a 7900, there are a lot of problems with them.  Mine is currently under RMA with MSI.  This is my first Nvidia card, and I would have gotten the ATI 1900 but I figure I'd go SLI in the future and I don't like ATI's crossfire implementation.

If you go with an nVidia card, go with something at least in the GeForce 6 series because they're full DX9 parts.  I'm not sure about the latest ATI stuff.  They change their naming schemes so much, I can't keep it straight.

Yea, thats the main reason I asked the question.  Nvidia is easier to follow, the higher the number usually means the newer / faster card.  ATI seems to jump around alot with their labels though after doing a little digging I think I'm figuring it out  ???.
