Title: Paperboy Controller Mamed
Post by: NickS on March 18, 2003, 08:01:41 am
Hello,

Has anyone been successful in hacking a Paperboy Controller for use in mame?. I know they use pots, so would you have to use an optipac to connect it a PC ?. Has anyone documented how to hack a paperboy controller for mame ?.

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
Nick.

I was going to do this but someone pipped me at the post on ebay (was it you??!!  >:( j/k)

You cannot use an Opti-Pac since it is not an optical device.  I would suggest either replace the pots with 100k ones and wire to a gamport (search google for 'build your own steering wheel', same principal but +Y-Axis), or keep the 5k pots and use 1UP's great Dual Strike hack (www.1uparcade.com I think).

Good luck :)

Also, a Star Wars yoke in itself should work well for Paperboy

I am building a driving cabinet extension to my already existing MAme cabinet and 1Up talked me into hacking some Dual Strike controllers.   I plan on adding a Star Wars yoke, Spy Hunter steering wheel with buttons, 2 sets of virtua racing gas/brake pedals and a HangOn motorcycle steering assembly.

I have decided to hack 4 USB Microsoft sidewinder Dual Strike gamepads to connect all of this stuff.  I have already hacked three of them, and the hacks work great.  My Star Wars yoke and Spy Hunter steering wheel have been connected and work perfectly.  I still have not made the cabinet to house all of this stuff though...... hehe

Do you have any plans to make the VAN light blink on your Spy Hunter wheel (if you can call it a wheel) when the weapons van becomes available?  I really want a fully functional VAN button on my control panel for Spy Hunter, but programming it is out of my league.  I would guess that the LED driving capabilities of the Ipaq would make it possible to make the scroll lock LED blink at the right time, but once again, it is beyond my skillset.

I am not sure whether Mame supports the VAN light, meaning if Mame does not allow a mapping to the VAN light, then I would have no idea how to get it to work.  I really have not looked into this that hard though.....sorry

See if the VAN Light is mapped to one of the keyboard lights.   If so, you might be able to hack the keyboard light somehow.

Also, if you know what that register is, or know the MAMEdev, you may be able to compile your own driver to send that light to the keyboard (or possibly some sort of serial, parallel, USB, or other output on your computer).
