Title: Captain America Bartop
Post by: jimjim on August 30, 2006, 11:34:03 pm
Okay, I've decided to post a project that I've started.  I am actually getting help from a friend who I met on the boards and just so happens only lives 15 miles from me.  (country miles, not city miles)  His BYOAC name is Circo.  He is the brains behind the project, I'm mainly the financier.

Here is the story, I mainly lurk on the boards because I just admire the skills many people have here.  Besides arcade games, my other passion is comic books.  (My collection is huge.)  So I decided to merge the two.  One of my favorite heroes is Captain America.  I noticed somebody already did a Captain Americade so I decided to stay away from that name.

So here is where I am at:  (I will try and post pictures tomorrow)

I got the bartop from Mameroom.  I was really impressed with the kit.  Because I like robotron and smash t.v., I got a dual joystick setup with 6 buttons in between.

total including shipping:          230.00

Here is where Circo is the man, with his connections, and spare parts, this is what I'm putting into the bartop, and what it cost.

Amd Athlon 3000 chip- motherboard onboard sound
512 MB Ram
250 GB Hard drive
17" LCD
Speakers
Micro atx power supply
ATi Radeon 128 MB 9250

total   $320.00

(I told you he is the man, I really can't thank him enough.)

I wanted this to look as sweet as possible, so I hired a man of extreme talent.  I hired Snaake to design the artwork for the machine.  He is almost done, so I will give a sample of what the marquee will look like.  I just wanted a few touch ups on some other things, he is working on,  but the marquee says it all.

Snaake's artwork is awesome, as usual.  He did work for my driver cab and it came out better than I could have expected.  Nice work.

Cool theme... Just my opinion, but Captain America looks a little fruity. Not sure if its his mouth or his stance, but he's too effeminate.
I'd also change the shield text to the true Captain America style.

Here is the control panel.  This is going to be a double stick with six buttons between them.

Yeah, I didn't think so at first either, but after looking at it again - I think it's his stance, with the hand on the hip pose that's doing it...

Come on guys - it's not that bad. Let's not bash this anymore, it's still pretty cool.

I agree with TOK about the old school font, I think it would look a little better...

Wait a minute... You hired a guy to slap some Photoshop layers over someone else's copyrighted artwork?

That one is definitely the real Captain America.  The other one is the more modern style that just doesn't feel right.

If you want authentic, get a picture of captain america stopping evil using hostess fruit pies. The delicious treat that makes even bad guy give up. People who read enough of the old comics will know what I mean....

Yeah,

I'm not getting your point.  Sorry.

I might be reading your post wrong, but it seems like you are being critical of me hiring somebody to use photoshop to decorate my cab.  Whatever.  I don't have the time to learn a program that I will hardly use, and I don't have a copy of the program.  A legitimate copy sells for $500.00 bucks.  (About what the whole cab is going to cost.)

I'm not even bragging how great this bartop is going to be, because it's not.  I got the kit from mameroom.  Once again it saved me time.  To me the fun is buying and assembling the parts.  I enjoy reading how people have rigged their parts to fit into bartops or micro-cabs.  It was also enjoyable going to Circo's store to find bargain prices to put this together.

I think the posts about his time-warp stance are funny.  His pose is a little effeminate.  (As Jerry Seinfeld would say, "Not that there is anything wrong with that.")

I do appreciate the work Snaake has put in with his graphic art skills.  I think the cab will look great.  I paid him to do work that I did not have the skill, time, or knowledge to do.

My post was more critical of Snake than you. He's making money putting other people's copyrighted pictures into his "art." Kind of lame, if you ask me. (And illegal, too.)

Anyhow, no worries man. I know what you say about the programs costing too much. It's just a tacky way for a guy to make a few dollars.

Here are some pictures of the progress.  I took them with my cell phone so the quality is only so-so.  We opted to use a 17" touch screen, unfortunately it is too wide for the bar top so on thursday I am getting the inside routed out so we can slide the monitor in.  As you can see the original artwork was not used at all.

Left to do:

- Install 17" touchscreen
- Mount speakers
- Order artwork for top of bartop
- Order bezel
- Route out area for volume control and usb ports on the rear
- Create Captain America Layout for FE

As someone who didn't like the original art, I have to tell you the final choices look fantastic!
Nice work.

That art is great. I wasn't a fan of the previous artwork.

Who did this?

That art is great. I wasn't a fan of the previous artwork.

Who did this?

Long story long, I contacted Scott at Mamemarquee about the printing.  I asked him if he could do a little touch up on the artwork before he printed it out.  He told me that he has a graphic artist friend that works for him named Vlad.  If I remember right, Vlad is from Eastern Europe and met Scott while going to school in America.  He told Scott he would like to pass along some ideas he had about the artwork just to see what I thought.  I was curious and said fine.  I was surprised that I would like Vlad's artwork better  because I really liked, and still do, Snaake's work.  When Vlad sent me the samples, I thought he nailed it and decided to go with that.  The pictures do not do the artwork justice.

I told Scott that I would send him pictures when things are done and give Vlad the props he deserves because most people do not know that Mamemarquees has somebody to help with graphic art and photoshop.  Scott, Vlad and Snaake all did great work and I highly recommend them all if they want photoshop and graphic art work.

Another changed design was the touchscreen.  (Circo's idea)  :applaud:  It really adds a degree of coolness to the machine.  Casino games (Video Poker and Slots), solitaire, bejeweled, Jukebox mp3s etc... are addicting.  I found a steal on eBay, and paid 300 bucks for a monitor that retails about 600.  His eBay name is drtouchscreen and when I talked to him, he said that I was the second person to buy a screen for an arcade machine.

Great job. I love the lines on the side panels, and the artwork. Be sure to post some better pictures if you get a decent camera.
