Title: Snes
Post by: rumpelstiltzkin on August 30, 2006, 10:19:20 pm
Hello i just recently bought a snes good condition boxed american . The top half is discoloured ive already heard and seen of this before . I just want to know what all the reasons for it are like old age or smoke related etc. Plus if you can restore it to more of a white colour what are all the methods and what method is cheapest and easiest and best.        MANY    THANKS

I got my SNES the day after it came out.

It has been in a non-smoke home for it's entire existance, so I don't think that would be the issue.

To me it would seem that the discoloration is just because of age... not sure how to clean it up.

So what do you mean are you saying that yours is discoloured to.The plastic on the top half is definitly different as the bottom half keeps its original colour.I have a white saturn also but thankfully mines still white but i think they can go yellow to all over. The snes top goes more of a yellow green.

thats odd...the top of my snes is its original gray, but the bottom half turned yellow/green/beige.

The plastic has aged.  Plastic is a "living" material and changes as it ages.  If it's not dirt on the surface you can't get it back to what it was.

Ditto. I'm not a smoker, I bought mine new back when the SNES was current, and mine has the same discoloration.

So i take it you noticed it getting worse year by year or did it take you about six years to even notice it.I think nintendo were planning some sort of glow in the dark consoles but ditched at the last minute :laugh:IT has a glow colour look . I suppose if every ones is like this i have to learn to like it but im sure someone knows a way.

I'm guessing he noticed it after taking it out of a box that it sat in for 8 years.

you know, I think I may actually have a Snes shell that is not faded.  I was gonna do a mini-itx mod and turn it into a computer, but deided an xbox is cheaper.  I'd be willing to sell it cheap if you want it.

I'll look for it tonight.

The miniSNES is a cool little console.  One of the few versions of any console I haven't found yet.
