I always cruise by the PLUG and PLAY isle at WAL-MART everytime i go,
Just to see if anything new has came out.
Well this time i look down at the ATARI FLASHBACK, Which i already have.
And what is setting next to it? Well a GOLDEN TEE (Plug and Play)
Graphics on the box looked decent. And the Control Panel favored the Arcade very much.
Well , Here is some links i came up with,
After i came home at tried to look it up on the net .
There appears to be a cabinet version on the way too !
from those awful people that made that Cheap MIDWAY home cabinet.
Well let me know if anyone has one of these ?
And if it's worth the purchase ?
It was $40.00

It's got a TRACKBALL!!!
:o
-
I can tell you ahead of time, the game itself is gonna be crap. The trackball and control panel is intersting though... looks like a pretty decent stand alone panel.
Those plug and play panels are easy to hack too.

Thanks for seeing into the future. Can you tell me if Austin Powers 4 will stink?

While I can't see into the future, I do have enough sense to know what to expect.
These plug n play games are usually snes level, graphics-wise, at best. That simply isn't enough horse-power to run the better golden tee games, meaning it's most likely gonna be some sort of lame, stripped-down version of the original golden tee. Remember, all the plug-n-play games up to this point have been from the snes era or earlier.
-
Hey, now where is that Star Wars plug and play with the yoke?

I can.
It will.

Howard, I would agree with you, except the price tag on this one is twice as much as the previous plug'n'play devices. I would say it will only be "slightly crappy". ;D

From the link
"Just like the arcade classic, this nifty self-contained unit features an ultra-responsive trackball and chunky buttons. The only thing missing is the coffin-sized cabinet covered in ---auto-censored--- burns "
I can't help it. It's funny to me everytime.

Not really... the sf2 plug n play was 30 bucks and while it didn't completely suck, it was based off the sucky sega genesis version, which had inferior graphics and sound to the snes version. And of course the arcade version wouldn't have even fit. The mortal kombat plug-n-play games were also 30 bucks. Mind you it is probably the best port they've made to date, but it was still a port of a stripped-down console version and not the arcade port.
Now the golden tee one is only 10 bucks more and I would say that has a lot more to do with the trackball than the quality of the game.
I guess what I'm saying is even if you fork over a little more cash, I find it hard to believe that people that couldn't even get a game from 1991 emulated at arcade perfection are going to be able to do it with a game that came out 8 years later.
Heck I get a lot of flack from it, but I even hate the classics plug n play games. The sound is bad and I'm sorry but I don't want the hi-scores moved to the side on the vertical games.
I do think the trackball will be worth looking into though. If (and this is a big if) the innards are arcade quality it would be a realatively cheap source of parts. Even if they aren't it would make a nice stand alone controller (maybe hack it to a usb mouse) for those casual golden tee fans.

OK who is going to be the guinea pig and buy one of these and dissect it?
-
Well I was at Walmart today and hoped to get my hands on it to test but they took down their demo isle. It sucks to because I've tried so many trackballs over the years I could have told you guys what kind of guts it had just by the feel. Their loss, they probably missed a 40 dollar sale.
:(

Well, if you did, you sure shouldn't have said that. You left yourself wide open on this one.
Doh.... Now I did it too...

Everyone on this board is 12... you can't mention balls and any verb in the same sentence without a comment like this.
-
I want to know how come the arcade version of Golden Tee 3-D doesnt have backspin but this does havae backspin on it.
-
The backspin is a funny thing... The newer arcade versions have it, but they also put it in the PC version and that came out in late 1998.

he he ... you said balls

well anybody buy this thing yet?
:laugh2: BALLS :laugh2:

From picking it up and looking at it, I can't believe it sells for $40. The "CP", for lack of a better term, seems WAY too small to get a good swing at it. Doesn't seem like it's all that poorly built, just undersized for the application, to the point that it doesn't seem to be all that decent a value for the money.

Bought one today, perfect for someone who doesn't care about details or someone who actually hasn't played the game. I will be returning it, but will be buying one later for a secret santa gift we do every year for the family party. One of my inlaws will eat it up.

Gotta love Wal-mart's EZ return policy :)

It happens that way when you are playing with the balls.

I take it that your amusement here stems from the totally different meaning of the word "F@g" in England.
If someone asks you if you've got a F@g to spare, here in the UK it means have you got a Cigarette! and NOT have you got a person of the gay persuasion to spare LOL ::) :laugh2: So what they're actually talking about is "Cigarette Burns"
Just in case you're wondering.. I had to use the @ symbol in the word F@g instead of "a" because the dumb auto censor filter on the forum keeps replacing the word.... DOH! :banghead:
Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

person of the gay persuasion
:laugh2: :laugh2: AHHH HAHAHAHA that's funny Ive never heard that.
-
Looking at the innards of this thing, it really seems that I could just wire a different trackball to it.
5V, GND and 2 signal wires per axis.
The one in there is understandably crappy, pretty much a cheesy mouse with an oversized ball :)

Could someone of you, who have purchased this item please make some gameplay video and post it here ? I really like to see how the software is like...
