Title: Poll: who are your favourite classic game companies
Post by: danny_galaga on August 22, 2006, 06:13:12 am
ok, it seems to me that there are quite a few one (or two) hit wonders in the arcade world. williams really only had two hits in video games, so i figured a few others should join the list. for instance Seibu Kaihatsu made Raiden, which to me is a classic (",).

three votes in this poll too, and tell us if youve hit 'other' (although with 21 choices, i dont think ive missed too many  ;) )

no, hang it! make it four votes! mine are atari, stern, namco and seibu kaihatsu. these four made games i enjoyed back in the day and i think most would say are classic (asteroids, berserk, galaxians, raiden).

and you can change your mind if you like (",)

edit: forgot gottlieb! so koolmecraig, i know there should be at least one other voter here besides me! i wont add any others though, youll have to use 'other' for that...

I didn't vote in your poll, but you're underestimating Williams hits... Defender, Stargate, Moon Patrol, Robotron, Joust and Smash TV were large earners. I was tempted to add Sinistar based on its cult following, but I'm not sure how commercially successful that was.

Ah ... but this is about favourites ... and Sinistar was very cool ... I totally and utterly sucked at it, but it was cool.

Cheers

yes, moon patrol is cool. it was done by irem, which ive put up there. williams made it under licence apparently. but this poll isnt about being picky about details, and i probably shouldnt have said that williams only made two video classics (i hadnt thought about sinistar, not one i remember from my youth). pick whatever you played on, so williams for moonpatrol if you like. but if you also liked r-type then you could say irem for both and have a spare vote! i probably could have made it five or six choices for voting but then youve got to draw a line somewhere  ;D

Heh.  Trying to keep it simple!  ;)

 :soapbox:

Really, while there were many great games out there back in the day, there were only a handful of companies responsible for most of them.  Some you listed had a great game, maybe two - Data East for Karate Champ and Tag-Team Wrestling, Universal for Cosmic Avenger (super looking cab, too!) and Stern for the terriffic title Berzerk.

I just didn't think them worthy of putting on a list of greatest companies simply due to their small body of quality work.

i know what you mean, but for some people their favourite game might have been made a company that only made one popular hit. after all, we dont really think back and think of favourite companies, but rather the games they played. gottlieb, with only one game is equal to cinematronics who had quite a few titles.also, for you the only two games you liked from data east are karate champ and tag team wrestling, but there are quite a few folk who like karnov or burning rubber. they also did robocop and real ghostbusters.

so what ive done is not decide for others what their favourites are. i think youre poll is a great idea (the polls always seem to be 'whats your favourite front end' lately!) and im glad youve started it. but give heaps of options and (as you can see above) there will be clear favourites that are similar to your poll, but notice on mine that capcom is obviously as fondly remembered as nintendo whereas there isnt that choice on yours...

They made Atari 2600 cartridges didn't they?
If I  remember correctly, their versions of baseball and football were way better than Atari's laughable versions, in fact they were similar to the intellivision versions.

EDIT: no wonder they were similar...they were a division of Mattel, hehe.  http://www.atariage.com/company_page.html?CompanyID=3

The Intellivision version of Lock N Chase was the best.  But I may be biased.   ;)

I would consider 1942 a classic.

Yup.  I recall that one from the tail end of the classic era.  :)

When I think "Capcom" I think all those damn dime-a-dozen fighting games.

Karate Champ -  :notworthy:  still the ONLY fighter worth playing!
