Title: Weak Tube could cause screen distortion? Ken?
Post by: mamerocks87 on August 19, 2006, 11:43:52 pm
Im thinking about shelling out some dough for a new monitor chassis. I recently got an 8 liners chassis and it sucks. The colors are bad and there is screen distortion that i just cant tweak out. ken i know you said something about alva amusements selling nice chassis...what was that site? also could a weak picture tube cause pincushion/screen distortion issues? Thanks in advance for the help everyone,

-kyle

Your pincushion could be a result of a slightly incompatible 8liners chassis (with the existing yoke). Bad capacitors can cause distortion and picture problems, especially on an older monitor chassis.

A weak picture tube could never cause pincushion. It would likely give you weak/missing colors or bad focus. You'd need to get it connected to a rejuvenator to test the tube to be sure.

Do you got the alva amusement site link? How do those chassis compare to the 8 liners?

There are two sites for Alva and one has cheaper prices posted so be sure to ask for the lower prices:

http://alvaamusement.com

http://yp.bellsouth.com/sites/alvaamusement/

I like them better than 8liners (Jen Shinn makes the 8liners chassis).

I have never really been able to understand the rationale behind selling a monitor chassis without the matching tube. I would have thought the chances of the tube/yoke being incompatible with the chassis is just too high. There are various yoke inductances and designs, and different pinouts of the tube base, with either one or two grid pins.
If the yoke is not compatible with the chassis then the correct yoke for the chassis might not be compatible with the tube.
I have a monitor here which has had the tube replaced. The yoke which came with the tube was not compatible at all with the arcade monitor chassis so it has had the arcade yoke fitted. This gives a reasonable picture with good convergence and purity after a lot of adjustment but with pronounced pincusion which cant be adjusted out. I think this kind of problem is only to be expected when mixing chassis/yoke/tube.

Perhaps instead of investing in a old monitor i should just buy a new one....I have a Gauntlet Legends cab that is fitted for a 27" monitor. Would a 25" look stupid in the cab? It seems the 27" is too big...Would the difference be rather noticable? Also if buying a new 25" monitor would the one listed on Alva's site for 200 bucks be an alright choice (MONITOR 25" M825H)?  Or would you guys advise to get a billabs, wells, ect.?

Alva sells mostly Wei-ya chassis and monitors. The Billabs is a Wei-ya monitor.

Thanks for the info Ken. I appreciate it. I hear that 25" monitors are being discontinued.....For this reason would it be stupid to try and get one if they are all being droped?

Due to the stupid FCC rulings/regulations, 25" monitors & tubes are no longer available.  :censored: They have been replaced by 24.8" in which the 24.8" tubes and/or monitors are directly interchangeable with 25". Mounts are exactly the same thank goodness. The only monitors that are hard to find right now are the 24.8" MEDIUM resolution that replaces a 25". All the monitor manufacturers are in prototype stages for producing these. Wells-Gardner is suppossed to have these available in late December or early January.
