Title: LED-Wiz question - Does it have to be connected to a PC to work?
Post by: Sizzler on August 14, 2006, 11:18:54 pm
I'm wondering if I can use the LED-Wiz as a LED lighting controller for non-pc non-computer lighting.

For example, if I wanted to build a 10"x10"x10" box with a bunch of LEDs sticking out of the sides, and have the LED-Wiz inside the box controlling the lighting effects, would that work?  Or does the LED-Wiz need to be connected to a computer to operate?

Also, if I understand correctly, the LED-Wiz is programmable.  Does it keep the lighting program in memory or does it have to have the data sent to it, real time, from a computer?

Thanks

It is driven and powered by the pc. If you use more than like 24 LEDs at the same time, you also need an external +5v power supply. the programmibility, is in the form of animations n such which are triggered from your computer. Don't see much way around it.

If you want a stand alone unit, go to radio shack and get some of the hobby books about electronics and learn about 555 timers and decade counters. You can start to create your own circuits and make em do just about anything you like. If you have the brain space to learn that kind of thing, it is a lot of fun.
